Very concerned about the lack of firepower in Aussie lower order, they have marked Smith and Hastings/Johnson to do most of the hitting, but don't think any of them are good enough to do that.
Smith is just a bloke who plays orthodox shots in an unorthodox manner, but that certainly doesn't make him a hitter.

Agree, is White too high in the order as he is brilliant at the hitting lower down?

May all change when Ponting comes back in though, difficult to know what to take from this series as so many players to come back in for both sides.

If we had that combination I would be very happy with our batsman's firepower. Smith is putting his hand up for selection in some ways, but he just makes an ideal 12th man.

Trott did seem to get a bit bogged down trying (and failing) to rotate in the middle overs against spin. Could cost England at some time in the WC.. but as of now he's doing a good job for England and it could work if everyone else is on form. Can't really criticize a guy who got a hundred, batted through most of the innings including a bit of a middle-order slump, and took a couple of wickets.

Couldn't you play Smith instead of Hauritz? Smith seems to be really improving as a cricketer and potentially would add more to your team than Hauritz wouldn't he?

Yeah that is true, no doubt. But I'm more concerned about the selectors refusal to select Marsh in the World Cup squad and now he's batting in the top 3 which is obviously a position that Paine would be expected to fill during the World Cup if an injury occurs.
You can't seriously think we are gonna bat him at #3 that too in the worldcup.!?
If both Mussey and Ponting make it, then its likely Dussey would sit on the bench as the reserve batsman, and if any batsman is going to get injured during the worldcup then a replacement would be called in which makes Paine' selection even more brainless, as instead of him we could have squeezed in an extra batsman or an all-rounder in order to add a bit more depth to the squad.

Smith can't get it off the square here. Doesn't look up to the finishing role.

Cue him smashing several sixes and winning the game.

You going to try and get 10 overs out of who mate?

Odd thought... shouldn't it be "Need X from Y" instead of "Needs X from Y"

It's fine for an individual, ex: Steve Smith needs to hit some sixes, but they're referring to a collective team of Australians, not the nation itself.

This is the crap I occupy myself with when situations get this dire.

Would be very surprised if Haurrie makes it in time for the worldcup, whereas Dussey is a bit of a waste at #7 and Johnson has been **** as batsman in LO cricket for a while now and whether he deserves to be in the XI as bowler is also something that's pretty debatable.
I said it already, but the more you look at that squad and its balance the more you can't help but think that Dan Christian would have been an awesome pick to bat at #7 and bowl a few overs as well.
