No chance of that happening. Mike's far too innocent to get involved in anything like that.

Besides, he's got the strong family unit of the Blacks to support his development into the second best all-rounder in World cricket after me.

Neils the best if we started to look at the averages in reverse...

Picking Up The Pieces

Issac Matthews, Taylorstown

IM: Well, Neil, firstly, Hello, I'd imagine that before this tour you
were expecting to have a great tour out in the dustbowls of India, but
obviously, it won't be starting as soon as you would have been hoping, as of
course to the dismay of many back home in Nixontown and all around CWLand,
you have damaged your elbow, bowling in a warmup match against Mumbai, and
you will miss the first 2 tests. Firstly how is your elbow feeling, and how
do you think that the CWXI will cope and perform without you, their
vice-captain and best bowler, considering their very poor record in Tests?

NP: My elbow is, unfortunately, still pretty damn sore. It's just
come out of a great big cast and the docs are insisting that it stays in a
sling for the next few days so I don't jigger the thing up again trying to
do more with it that it wants to. It's not making eating things easy,
neither.

Everyone knows our Test record's not great, and on a tour such as this, any
injury to a front line player will hurt. You'll get big odds on a CWLand win
today, but I think the bookies are under-rating us - there's talent
throughout the team, and one day it's just got to come to fruition.

IM: Now onto a big talking point around CWLand, the captaincy of the
CWXI, as I'm sure you know the argument is that, Brendan Goff, the current
captain, doesn't deserve a spot in the Test team, and should be dropped. This
would need the team looking for a Test, and more than likely ODI Captain,
because it would be illogical to have 2 captains. As vice-captain you would
be first choice for many people, what do you think and say about this tricky
point.

NP: What do you want me to say? Do I look like the kind of player to
start rebellions and bring down the ranks from within? Obviously captaining
CWLand would be a fantastic honour - but at the moment, Brendon is captain
and will be until further notice - he has my full support, if that were not
the case I wouldn't be vice-captain and part of the senior setup. I think
it's grossy irresponsible of our media to unsettle the side like this, they
know we have enough issues already
.
IM: Spin is an important part in your career, and a new spin talent
has developed through you, Davey Richards, who captained the A Team, is now
touring India, and through your injury may pick up a Test Cap. How do you
think a) Spin is developing in CWLand and b) Where do you think the next
spinners will come from?

NP: Spinners are starting to prosper nicely back home with several
tracks, the CWBCC Stadium in particular, taking turn - plus the efforts of
multiple coaches right down at the grass roots level. I was lucky enough to
visit a wrist-spin coaching day at Twybridge before we came out on tour, and
there are some very, very good kids coming through the ranks. One little
lad, think he was nine years old, managed to get me out with his first ball
to me in the nets - mind, that ain't saying too much. In the domestic game,
Tarick Weber and Sean Bennett are next in line I feel - so long as they can
stop a) trying to kill each other and b) spending every other night getting
stoned

IM: This off-season, after touring India, we will see you in
Pikeyland a.k.a. Chelmsford, Essex. You will be playing with David Kennett,
what do you wish to achieve in this years County Championship?

NP: Lots and lots more wickets! I loved last season, and can't wait
to build on it and push my career FC wicket haul towards 500. I'm also
really trying to improve my stickability as a tail-ender, and a few runs
(maybe a 50?) would be nice too.

IM: Now on to a topic that hasn't been discussed much, what are your
views on the incident, that we recently saw, involving the PA Rep, being
appointed and then quitting, which leaves, the so called second-choice Rep
in charge, he is also a captain of a Dev League team, have you any
reservations about this?

NP: I don't think anyone should fill a position without mandate.
Whilst I do believe there are possible conflicts, I will stand with the vote
of the majority. However I do not feel that 'election by default' is
acceptable.

IM: In other news, your CW Black teammate, Sangrah Bhatia, has
recently announced that he will retire after the India series, this leaves a
hole in your Development Team, who from the whole CWXI Circuit would you
like to fill that gap? And what are your hopes for Season 9?

NP: Sangs took so many wickets for the Blacks, he'll be very very
difficult to replace. As an International standard seamer, there are few who
could fill his shoes - Kennett, Wright or Hoy perhaps - all good team men -
but perhaps one of the younger guys can step up from inside the Black ranks.

IM: Well, Neil, I've enjoyed talking to you here in Bangalore, any
predictions for the Test and ODI series before I go?

NP: At least six instances of diarrhoea, Hakon to break his own
record for the slowest century ever, and Sangrah to reach his 400. Oh, the
results? Well, I've got a feeling it's our time.

IM: Thank you for your time Mr. Pickup.

NP: And thank you for yours.
