Spirited Western Australia Humble CW XI
Cricket Web XI vs Western Australia
Drama at the WACA
Two clutch overs from Bryce Cunningham in the closing stages of the game meant that time ran out on Western Australia as they charged toward an unlikely victory against the Cricket Web tourists. The final 4 overs saw a target of 20 runs for the home side, but the bowling of Cunningham and David Kennett sealed a draw for the tourists.
Opting not to enforce the follow-on on day two of the match, Brendan Goff called his team in at a score of 133/5 in the second innings. It meant that Western Australia would need 313 runs for victory from 74 overs left in the game. The move kept the all results alive, though the batting of Justin Langer and Chris Rogers swung the game dramatically toward WA.
Langer followed up a struggling first innings 46 with a fluent and timely 105 to spearhead the chase. He hit 10 fours and 4 sixes in the innings, and even as he departed at 201/1, the chase was firmly in the hands of WA.
Rogers continued the challenge and withstood a double strike from Nathan Hoy to take his team to the brink of a big win. As young Cunningham bowled a fierce mixture of short ball and yorkers, however, he kept some pride with the CW XI.
Upon winning the toss back on the first day, Goff chose to take first strike on a lovely WACA wicket. The early going of 18/2 suggested it to be the wrong decision, but Goff denied the opposition bowlers too much glory, and asserted himself for a brilliant hundred.
The middle order struggled to provide substantial support, until a counterattack from Cunningham ensured a score of 346 all out.
All eyes then shifted to the Cricket Web bowling outfit, and especially young Greg Thomas, who was representing his country for the first time. Thomas bowled with a lot of heart and enthusiasm, and was rewarded with two wickets in an outstanding team effort with the ball. Kennett and Camps took 3 apiece, and a score of 167 all out clinched a lead of 179 runs.
Keen to get his batsmen in some form, Goff chose to bat again. Though Mamesh started pleasantly, the top order collapsed once more, and 56/4 was a worrying sight. To the rescue came Chris Butler alongside his captain, and the young left-hander scored a very impressive unbeaten half-century before the declaration.
Only Nathan Hoy found any consistent rhythm the second time around, and the Cricket Web XI narrowly escaped a humiliating tour opener.
