Cricket Web XI in Australia
2nd Test - Adelaide Oval
A dramatic lower order collapse threatened to undermine the hard work done by the Cricket Web batsmen throughout the final innings of the game, but the determination of Nathan Hoy and David Kennett ensured a drawn result. The resolute batting of the two lower order players kept the series alive and received much-deserved fanfare.
Matthew Hayden's thunderous innings of 177 unbeaten (dropped on 44 and 136) set up a large 6/397 declared in Australia's second innings. The score meant that the Cricket Web XI would chase a target of 431 for victory, with 110 overs left in the game.
A snorter removed Thamba Mamesh first up, but Brendan Goff followed up his first innings ton with an equally assured knock of 65. He and Mørk battled the Australians admirably, and set the tone for similarly courageous innings by Andrew Cloete and Chris Butler.
Though Butler was caught sweeping off the final ball before tea on day five, the tourists entered the final session relatively comfortably placed at 4/222. Lee bagged Cloete with an outswinger, and panic set in.
Pushing forward to a Warne legbreak, Camps was adjudged caught at legslip. Replays suggested that, unlike his similar first innings dismissal, it was a poor decision. At 6/248 the Australians felt right back on top and when Hoy was dropped by Gilchrist off Lee a run later, it truly seemed a matter of time.
Some 19 overs remained as Kearsley lost his middle stump off the inside edge. Four bowlers remained to fight on for the Cricket Web XI. Each second, each delivery, every defensive stroke that ticked onward kept everyone in wired suspense.
Gillespie finally removed Hoy in the closing stages, and the Australians found new life with 23 balls to take the final two wickets. In just his second Test match, Greg Thomas was made to face a challenge that has felled many with far greater batting prowess.
Equal to the task, he launched into a cover drive immediately and was off the mark with 3 runs. The shot granted Kennett a measure of confidence in his young partner, and the two negotiated the final overs from Gillespie and Warne with surprisingly little trouble.
A straight drive by Kennett off Gillespie's third ball of the final over of the game fired the point home in emphatic fashion. A Test match saved in style.
