1st Youth Test: Australia Under-19s vs Cricket Web Under-19s
at WACA, Perth
Scorecard
Ball By Ball
Six players contributed well enough in Cricket Web's effort; the four youngsters batting from eight to eleven, as well as last season's first class revelation Dwyer, need a good, hard look at themselves. The specialist bowlers, however, made 30 runs at an average of 4.28; they took 117.4 overs to take nine wickets, and each of them cost a tad over 55 runs. All in all, they allowed Australia to take a comfortable seven-wicket win which did not look remotely possible even when Austin had just trapped Will Kerr lbw at 321 for five.
The Webheads had been inserted, as a murky day and a bouncy wicket was expected to assist the new-ball efforts. Instead, Matt Luff bashed a fiery 49 in an opening stand of 65. Arnold was not dominant on the first day, but still forged useful partnerships, and his score of 62 was the third-highest; it was eclipsed by Kerr and Donald, who had nearly taken the game beyond the hosts with their stand of 107. Yet, Austin and Day exploited the second new ball much better than the first, roaring through the tail to leave Blake Donald stranded on 70.
The bowling, however, finally showed signs of the first class inexperience. Four-balls dominated, and the Australians were apt at dispatching them - runs came at a ferocious rate under the baking Perth sun on the second day, with Philip Hughes and Simon Keen scoring centuries at around a run-a-ball. Wade and Jamie Smith were slightly more restrained, but still played major parts in dominating partnerships, and Wade struck three sweet sixes during his 73. Pares finally recovered his form from a couple of days ago when bowling against the tail on the third morning, who opened the gap and were duly punished, but his overnight figures of nought for 89 from 23 overs describes the bowling more accurately. Roberts was an occasional threat with his leg spin, which worked out a belligerent Hughes, but was a costly weapon, while it took a gentle delivery from Ritchie to get Keen out on a Nelson.
Zac Ritchie paired up well with Ashley Arnold after initial strikes by Keen, and their third-wicket stand of 159 brought the Webheads into a hard-fought lead. Faulkner, who had got both openers out in the first innings, had been wasting his pace on players with good technique; however, once Robson had Ritchie lbw, he returned for a stunning spell. The hosts whipped their guests with hostility, as the last six partnerships combined for a meagre 29; the reasonable position at 131 for four turned into a target of 160, which, while a minor challenge, was academic by the time Matt Luff, in desperation, was called upon - and bowler Murphy with a gentle delivery, hardly 65mph, which grazed off stump after Murphy had left it alone. It was a minor setback; Kumar Sarna hit 79 as the Australians coasted home by seven wickets.
