Ahh, so Australian authorities should have just ignored the stats that showed a disproportionate number of international horses sent to Australia for the Cup were getting injured? Goodo.

Here's another take on it from an informed writer.

Jan Brueghel was given an MRI scan before he even travelled, Coolmore don't take risks. As O' Brien pointed out "It's unlucky for us and lucky for them. He was an improving Group 1 horse with 8st 7lbs and Ryan Moore on him". He was probably going to hack up, and Racing Victoria knew it. Be surprised if he sends anymore to Aus after this farce, which is probably just what Victoria wants.

The Race that stops other nations!!

Halfway through the Gordon Elliott benefit weekend. 4 winners at Down Royal yesterday and probably get 4 or 5 more today.

Breeders Cup tonight, I hope City of Troy wins the classic. The turf mile looks a corker with Notable Speech and Porta Fortuna clashing. Hopefully Bradsell or Big Evs win the Turf Sprint.

Seeing Sierra Leone, Fierceness and Forever Young run such huge races in the Breeders' Cup Classic, it makes Mystik Dan's victory against all of them in the Kentucky Derby one of the year's most head-scratching results.

Mixed weekend internationally for Coolmore. City Of Troy was never a factor in the Classic, but they won it anyway with Sierra Leone. Lake Victoria and Henri Matisse were very good winners in the two-year-old races, and then Switzerland came out and did something quite special at Flemington.

Anyone else betting on "Circle of Fire" in the cup tomorrow? Worst barrier draw with 24 but my Dad loved Johnny Cash and Ring of fire was his favourite song so easy pick. That's the extent of my horse picking ability 😀

Put $10 each way at $21/$6 odds

I'll go for Zardozi. It doesn't seem to be a particularly strong edition of the Cup this year.

Sharp 'N' Smart would be a decent chance for NZ if he was right back in his peak 3YO form, but I'm not convinced he is.

That race was a heck of a spectacle. Amazing result for Sheila Laxon, who won the Cup with the great mare Ethereal more than 20 years ago. She's lived in Australia basically ever since, but still a Kiwi, surely.

I thought Zardozi was in business halfway up the straight, but those other ones just out-stayed her in the last bit.

Getting 6th with my random selection of Circle of Fire was pretty good I reckon. He had a really long run to finally get to the fence after starting from the outside barrier 24

I guess you could say the handicapper did his job, there was certainly no blot (if there was, the vets removed it). Great finish, but probably not a winner many will remember in a couple of weeks time.

2008: Viewed

1996: Saintly
1992: Subzero

1981: Just A Dash

Knight's Choice - lead up form:

9th - Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m)
16th - Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m)
14th - Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m)
5th - Group 3 Bendigo Cup (2400m)
1st - Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m)

That was its lead up form....but it's now a Melbourne Cup winner. No wonder Knight's Choice paid 70-1 (even 100-1 with some bettig agencies)...
