Johnso certainly took umbrage to my tongue-and-cheek comment.
Ignoring the (hopefully) tongue-in-cheek reference to an England recall, it was a very good innings. I was at The Oval yesterday, and conditions were as favourable for Notts as they possibly could be at this particular venue. Throw in a Surrey lineup without recognised numbers 4 or 5 batsman in the side, and you really fancied Notts to bowl us out very cheaply indeed if they took a couple of early wickets. Which they did, of course. Effectively, numbers 4 to 6 were all batting a couple of places too high due to injuries, and if Stoneman had gone cheaply too, we could still have been dismissed for something around 120. But he did his job superbly and we'll now see how Notts shape up against 375.
You're a Notts supporter btw? My take on them was they had the sort of attack that will keep them in business when there's anything in the wicket for them but not enough for the less helpful tracks. Fletcher bowled very well indeed, as did Wood. And Milne came back very strongly after an errant first spell.
I didn't even realise that Elgar was playing for us until I turned up and looked at the team sheet yesterday. I suspect he'll be opening for us during the 5th test, as you'd think that Burns will be playing for England by then. Maybe that's why they've signed him. Tom Curran the standout performance today; 5 wickets after a relatively mediocre season is a great comeback. I really thought we'd struggle in this match without Pope, Curran S, Roy, Finch and Dernbach, but so far so good. Will Jacks the latest talented youngster to contribute.Johnso certainly took umbrage to my tongue-and-cheek comment.
Yeah I think the flaws in Notts' team has been shown up. Fletcher is a solid work-horse where lack of pace isn't an issue. Whereas for L.Wood/Gurney/Footitt I think they not really Div 1 FC material anymore. Of course we missing Jake Ball. What is Milnes like ? I know Kent are showing interest but Notts seriously need a strike-bowler and I think they will try and prize Zak Chappell away from Leicestershire but my concern is his fitness record. The batting is there for all too see. Thanks to Ross Taylor for probably doing enough to keep Notts in Div 1 in the first part of the season.

Your boys are unstoppable. The depth. I mean I know Conor McKerr is talented being a Saffer from SA u19 age group. But seems to have had injury issues. Comes in and contributes like today and you look at where he is in the pecking order for example. Top squad and bringing through young English talent. Deserved champions. Glad for Deano Elgar to also be there to win the County Championship. Hope he doesn't have to be called back before the end.
Quite a day for the Currans.I didn't even realise that Elgar was playing for us until I turned up and looked at the team sheet yesterday. Surrey really do have a great team.Quite a day for the Currans.
Think the younger one making FC debut for Northants
As a Surrey supporter you can really say it's a golden generation to have 5/6 all around the same age come through.
Gleeson was playing, just he didn't bowl until second innings (not that the situation demanded it!).Durham beaten comfortably by a Northants side without Duckett & Gleeson.
Considering the money they spend they do bring through a lot of their own. Got to give them credit for that.Surrey really do have a great team.
My major gripe for years was that they signally failed to do that. For a county with Surrey's catchment and resources, the lack of home grown talent being introduced for the 12 years or so at the start of the millennium was scandalous. Maybe they had become complacent given the success under the previous generation, but I don't really know. But under Alex Stewart's watch things have really turned around.Considering the money they spend they do bring through a lot of their own. Got to give them credit for that.
Assuming that Lancashire are as good as down, I can't see Worcs, Yorks and Hamphire all winning enough games to overtake you. But clearly you're dead right about your batting. We need 1 more win or the embarrassing is still on you think ? We were in a good position to come top 3 but now we in a desperate state.
McKerr comes in and gets 7 wickets. Dernbach, Morkel, T.Curran, S.Curran. That is decent seam depth for Surrey with enough strike power in it. May even add Plunkett.
With no Ball the Notts attack lacks bite but Fletcher is a solid domestic seamer. The batting is not Div 1 standard that was known on relegation last time. The bowling got them up from Div 2 and they still didn't act quick or well enough.
Is he a batting or bowling all-rounder ? Spin ?Bohannan and Vilas making a mockery of my comment about Lancashire being as good as down. Young Bohannan looking a real prospect.
I don't usually approve of gambhiring, but will make an exception for you DavidBohannan and Vilas making a mockery of my comment about Lancashire being as good as down. Young Bohannan looking a real prospect.
Purely from a Surrey pov, it's hard to see why your boys are at the bottom of the division. You ran us far closer last week than anyone else has lately.I don't usually approve of gambhiring, but will make an exception for you David
We're a bit like England - dreadful top order batting (despite them not being poor players)Purely from a Surrey pov, it's hard to see why your boys are at the bottom of the division. You ran us far closer last week than anyone else has lately.
