So experience has no value...?
This whole concept that a guy doing well in County Cricket will be **** in Test cricket until he's had 'enough experience' is a total nonsense.

If you suddenly take someone to India or Australia who's never faced those conditions before, then there'll be a learning curve. But that would be the same whether they've played 200 CC games or 20. Unfamiliarity with conditions is different to experience.

Experience obviously helps players develop their game on a fundamental level. If you've spent 20,000 hours in the nets as opposed to 10,000 hours then that's obviously a benefit. As can the feedback from having weaknesses exposed in matches and learning from it. Or people like Warne who learned how to maximise his effectiveness with a reduced range/strength of weapons. But their performances already indicate their nous, naivety or whatever else. You don't need to penalise them further for playing fewer matches or being young. Someone who averages 40 over 200 matches isn't fundamentally better than someone who averages 40 over 50 matches (apart from the fact it is harder to sustain over more games).

You don't learn to play Test cricket by playing county cricket.

English cricket (I know from close observation) is becoming very good at identifying young talent - and by that I mean from U11 upwards, but they don't discount later developers. They are good at bringing them through county age group structures and working with clubs to help them develop. They are aware of the pitfalls and issues (I know of a very talented U14 player - his county (speaking to one involved) rate him highly but (someone from the coaching staff told me last year) he has one problem - his father. "You have ways of managing that sort of thing?" I asked. "Oh yes"). I see some of the guys playing very good club 1st XI cricket at 15/16/17 - they may not contribute hugely there quite yet but within a couple of years might well be past club cricket. Thirty years ago they would have been playing 2nd team or lower to 'learn their game'.

In a different sport Clive Woodward was known for blooding young players 'before they were the finished product'. Some didn't make it, but they likely would not have if their debut had been delayed. Others had 20-30 international caps before, according to some, they should have made their debut.

A great case demonstrating the correct policy was Stuart Broad. I reckon he played Test cricket two years before he 'deserved' to. But two years after his debut he had improved and was pretty established - probably gave him at least one more year as a Test player.

I can't believe I appear to being agreeing with Scaley - I'll go and lie down.

Cant wait to see how we get on against hampshire tomorrow, im confident of another good season my only worry is that raynor might have punched above his weight last season, but he did pretty well for the lions and in the warm up games so hopefully he proves me wrong. I dont expect us to lose any players to england all summer and having voges all year is a massive plus. Much better than bailey option than bailey was last season

Yep, no chance of Crane being in England contention for later in the summer when he's not playing.

In other news Middlesex coming out against the ECB. A bit naughty after Strauss gave them a helping hand to the title. I wonder if the writers for Game of Thrones keep an eye on English cricket as a source of inspiration.

Still peddling the Bairstow **** when it's been shown to be false? So unlike you to misrepresent things when it helps you maintain a rant.

No Croft and Jimmeh rested so Livingstone is captaining. Meteoric rise after only getting in the side last year but not many other options.

Seam bowling looks incredible thin in the selected side, Jarvis and Mclaren with Clark and Proctor for backup. Need a big score batting first.

Rawlins straight into the Sussex team.

Liked the look of Weatherly last week for Kent (on loan from Hampshire) against Glos. Had time and played the ball late. Strokes the ball rather than bash it. Unfortunately not playing this week with Dickson back from injury.

Essex and Somerset both playing their second spinner at Taunton. Essex's bowling is so meh. Don't think Wagner is a great new ball bowler. Porter meh. Zaidi a white ball cricketer. Somerset look strong with one Davies replaced by another in the wicketkeeping.

English players fairly mediocre so far in the IPL. Wonder which will be the first to be dropped.

Yea you can see why the ECB had all those pre-CC matches now. Gives Alsop, Crane, Helm and the like some game time before the counties pass them up for selection.

Poynter giving the Durham quicks something to bowl at.
Hard to see this match making it beyond Day 3.
