See Gregory is the new Botham, getting a wicket with a rank ball in his first over:wub:

Oh dear, I was hoping Willey's stance was a cancer limited to him alone until I saw Dent.

Benny H becoming a more than serviceable bowler in the short formats is pretty great. He's not terrible in FC either.

A few more runs would be welcome though.

This last wicket partnership for Somerset is so awesome. Hope they get them home now.

Looked like there was some cracking games today. Warwickshire's chase looks a weird one. Hard to know if Buttler just played an excellent knock on a ok wicket and that 296 was a big score, or that the runchase was kinda botched.

Dunno what's really happened to Jamie Overton. His wide of the crease, spear it in, somewhat erratic, early 80s mph looks pretty mediocre to me right now. Seems to have gone nowhere in recent years.

Looks like Olly Stone is injured again. bleh.

Went to see a List A match today at the Ageas Bowl (cracking stadium, beautiful weather!). It was really interesting comparing it to domestic cricket back home. Observations below:

- Westley can certainly bat. Paced his innings very well and looked a proper batsman. The bowling was naff (see below) but in terms of temperament and shots all around the wicket I would say he would do reasonably well at international level.

- The bowling was dreadful. Whilst the fielding and running between the wickets was definitely superior to back home, the bowling was far worse. The spin was ordinary apart from the leggie Crane who definitely has something to work. But the biggest dissapointmeny was the seam bowling. I don't think anyone was even consistently in the low 80mph range. It was dire dibbly dobbly stuff all day. Is this just an Essex and Hampshire thing or a more general statement of county cricket?

- I loved watching Jesse Ryder bat. He made it look preposterously easy. A class above everything else on display IMHO.

Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed my day and will go again if I can.

Glad you enjoyed your day.

Generally speaking I would say that's a fairly accurate representation of the pace bowling in county cricket. The schedule is non stop so guys get rested or bowl at way less than 100% most of the time. The talent is spread fairly thin over the 18 counties especially once they start playing all 3 formats. Not sure the coaching of fast bowlers is that great at any level and we don't really produce the naturallly quick guys (The quick guys that come in from overseas tend to breakdown or have lost 5mph by the end of the season which would tend to suggest it is more schedule problems than coaching if anything.). Ageas Bowl tends to be a fairly lifeless wicket so often teams will just put out the medium pace chuggers especially if the boundaries are long.

Hampshire generally are a pretty plodding pace attack, although they've brought in Fidel(long term injury) and Tino(rested) to liven them up this last year. Essex had Napier and Porter missing today who are both more 80-85mph. There tends to be a decent bit of 50 over cricket played where there aren't many/any guys getting regularly over 80mph which is a problem.

50 over competition is basically where most teams 'rotate' their seamers. This is the competition teams give least of a **** about in most cases, and it often shows. Especially later in the season, teams eliminated from the knock out rounds put out 2nd XIs.

Yeah it is a shame.

On top of that you have the fact that Hampshire have so many injuries, the bowling attack that played today is just cobbled together really. If they were all fit then Topley, Edwards and Wood most likely would be in that side, sure Edwards is the only quick one out of those but it is a huge leap in quality when it comes to one day bowling to what Beamer saw today.

The county circuit does appear to drowse quite a few of them down and make them look very plodding compared to the U19 World Cup introduction to their bowling, for sure.

Seemingly Tymal Mills needed his diagnosis of a congenital back condition to get out of the 16-round red ball season, and therefore gear everything towards rapid pace. Otherwise, it's like taking a busty girl to live on a Grimsby beach. It's never higher than about 14 degrees down on this beach, and she's knitting herself woolly pullovers when you check back in on her.

Gloucestershire's recent schedule

29 May- 1 June Championship 4 day game @ Worcestershire. Finished after 6pm on final day.
June 2 T20 @ Middlesex
June 3 T20 @ Kent

June 5 50 Over @ Somerset
June 6 50 Over @ Glamorgan

June 8 50 over @ Bristol v Middlesex

June 10 T20 @ Bristol v Glamorgan

Not really a rare thing either.

It's just a gigantic slog. If your a batsman in form or a spin bowler playing either championship or t20/50 over it's probably not too bad. Otherwise it's a struggle. The playing of course but also the travelling between games. Strauss has come in and tried to improve things but he's found a lot of opposition.

Div 1 Championship is a good standard and imo up there as one of (if not) the best world first class competitions
Div 2 is a more moderate standard

Both limited overs comps are a pretty average standard imo. T20 is way behind other comps - and the 50 over is moderate although afaik no countries have a particularly high standard of 50 over comp.

Think it means that the selectors have to be especially good at pinpointing fast bowlers at an early age. If they think they can make it in time they need to be fast tracked like Finn, Broad, Anderson. They might not be quite at the standard when they're picked but they ain't stuck in county cricket becoming medium pacers bowling 600 overs a summer.

CkQua0vWsAElE8D.jpgI sincerely hope some of the Notts lads got phone numbers, you know Broad would have if he'd been there, and yeah this Essex attack is horrible.
