Haha, never doubted Collingwood ever. Not for one second, not for one iota. Not one jot. Brilliant bugger. Great win by England.

Sponsors will be happy that this is going to 3 matches (I imagine, unless England pull off another win).

But I have to say England - too little, too late in regards to the entire tour.
Regards the ashes, obviously. But the last 7 days have been the biggest filip our oneday side has had in years, almost whatever happens on Sunday & beyond.

If Watson isn't batting in the top 5, he really shouldn't be in the team at all. Especially given he doesn't seem to be bowling at 100%. I'd bat him at 4 - as always, his technique looked quite impressive tonight until he had to go aerial.
How can you you even consider batting Watson at 4 when you consider who you already have there? If he's going to bat in the top-order it has to be as an opener. A bit like Simon Doull did for ND a few years back and how Vettori did for NZ for a few games

I also find that a real weakness was exposed regarding Ponting's captaincy. He should have realised quicker that when England were prodding the ball into the leg side and running to have a man at mid wicket and square leg especially for Collingwood. He needs to be more ruthless. To many easy singles and to many gaps. And what was all that about in the last over he puts all the fielders in a ring on the off side when Nixon was on stride and he was walking across to the off side to flick it to leg.Quite bizzare!!!.Should may as well have put 8 fielders on the leg side for Collingwood and just bowl as far outside off stump without being a wide.

Well done England a very good game of cricket, deserved more of a crowd.

Has the Healy/breast cancer thing, been discussed on this thread?, Or do we need a seperate thread:unsure:

The fact that they are equally at home batting down the order and Watson isn't helps me consider it tbh.

It's not about who the better batsman is, it's about getting the most out of all the players at your disposal.

TBH I think when NZ play England in the WC they have to play 2 spinners. We all know that England are poor players of spin bowling and if you saw Fintoff playing hogg you'll see why.

It's all about maximum benefit for the team. If Watson bats at 4 and averages say 35-40 rather than batting at 7 and averaging 20 and wasting deliveries at the death, it's going to be of far more benefit to the team (provided he scores at a decent rate) to put him up the order, especially given how well Hussey and Clarke bat in the late overs. Hodge is a bit of a problem because he's best at 4 too IMO, but he and Watson should have been in the middle order today.

Obviously Watson has to be picked because of his bowling, so the aim should be the best way to balance the batting order with him in the team. Someone like White is well suited to batting at 7, while Watson simply isn't. You wouldn't put Hayden or Hodge (or Kallis, say) down there either.

I think you are overrating the guy's ability actually. From what I've seen of him, and admittedly I haven't seen any of the state cricket he's played (where he has a good record obviously), he's looked no better than a solid player with a sound technique but limited talent with both bat and ball. But then I see the same thing with Cameron White so maybe it's just the best that Australia has to offer. I expect better tbh from such a great cricketing nation.

To be brutally honest (TBBH) Hodge shouldn't be in the team (obviously since he's replacing Symonds).

It's just an annoying backlog with the middle order since Hayden is opening again. If Watson replaced Hayden as an opener and Symonds was fit there'd be no concern IMO.

In any case, is Shane Watson the Nathan Astle for Australia if he does open? Though Astle>Watson as a batsman but Watson>Astle as a bowling option, obviously.

But I hope you can see what I mean, there.

Why are you comparing Shane Watson with Hayden, Hodge and Kallis ffs? The guy's a bowling allrounder if you ask me
