Watson isn't too far off returning i dont think with Hayden out of form. I would like to see Clarke move back up to the top of the order until then though, with either another specialist bat brought in or Hoggy could slot in down the order.

I was happy to see Mitchell Johnson bowl well in his 2nd spell yesterday, he got hit around abit in his first and didn't quite seem to hit the right length but in his 2nd he was superb.

Lee bowled well again i thought without doing anything special. Hogg was solid as ever too.

Hayden is being criticised too much. He is a great opening batsman. Imagine the price us in New Zealand would pay for a player of his ability to open for us. You cant just say he's rubbish after a little bit of recent poor form.
He's never been a great One Day batsman. He was playing like this when he was dropped the last time in 2005, there's nothing recent about this.

4 years ago to this day he was ranked the best ODI batsman in the world by the ICC. His average and strike rate in ODIs are still excellent. He hasn't been in vintage knick, he'll be the first to admit that but he used the opportunity of plenty of time last night to work on that and still everyone slags him off because he didn't win the game in 10 overs. Ridiculously harsh criticism from Aussie board members here particularly when there is no obvious replacement.

No they didn't need a fast score, but we dind't want an excessively slow one either. Yes he may be using it to boost his confidence etc. etc. but, i'm sure i wasn't the only person to notice that when he DID try and up the anty, and looky horribly scratchy in doing so. Sure he hit a four, that was about 2 inches away from being snavlled up at Mid On.

He's made starts in 3 matches this series, and has looked horrible in each of them as soon as he's tried to score at a reasonable rate. Fair enough to make a circumspect start to get your eye in, but if you cannot capitalise upon that, as Hayden hasn't been able to, and neither was Katich able to before him, it's a waste of deliveries for several reasons. 1) Because your not turning the strike over to the dominant batsmen enough, which as we've often seen before, can lead to their demise, & 2) because your hampering the teams ability to post a competitive target.
Well i will admit he din't play the best innings and never looked comfortable but the fact he survived to be not out at the end is all that matters. It might be different if we were chasing a large score and he was scoring slowly, i would admit he did something wrong.

Hayden is the sort of player who can't score really fast for example a run a ball like the like's of Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting etc, but the fact that he scores quick enough and can build up a partnership shows he can do that and i mean if you score at say a strike rate of 70 in a partenership when there is someone like Adam Gilchrist or Ricky Ponting who score at close to a run a ball and all Hayden needs to do is rotate the strike and get the faster scorers on strike. It dosn't always hamper the Batting Team's ability to get a large enough score. Usually if the opening pair can last 15 overs and score at more than 4 runs an over a competitive score can be posted.

What you mean until he got the captaincy again?

I don't think it's just coincidence...
Yeah, thats about it, isn't it?

When he is shackled with the captaincy, its like a huge weight on him and he simply cannot handle it.

I still don't understand why the ECB persist with Flintoff while Vaughan is injured....surely they see what we all can see?

i think hayden played yesterday
as he was in a glorified net session it would have been satisfactory for him as he got feel for the ball but as for the selectors they would have been fuming the way he played, if after all this he gets knocked over cheaply tomorrow what will the selectors do then.

Well I for one am going to support Matthew Hayden in how he played yesterday, I thought it was an innings that got better as it went on and near the end he begin to find the middle of the bat. He desperately needed some time in the middle to work himself into form, I've got no problem with that because it did Australia's chances no harm and they were always going to win pretty easily.

He's not ranked 1 anymore, he's ranked 39th, and the rest of the order is in the top 12. Even when he was highly ranked it was dubious. Jaques has made 80-odd already this morning, he made a fifty the other day. He's the perfect partner to Gilchrist, he's capable of big innings, batting first or second, and has an excellent strike-rate.

What has Hayden done to get in the team? Why is he deserving of 5 straight games to find his form when other players barely get a look in when they're playing well? And he's 35, what is he finding his form for? The world cup? He'll more than likely be a liability there the way he plays and is playing. What future does he have in this team at his age when he can't even find good form against opponents as dire as the current English team. He was lucky yesterday that the poms played so poorly, 30(68) ain't gonna cut it anywhere else. Imagine they made 200-300, would it be ok for him to play himself in so painstakingly then?

I don't think I'm being harsh at all. Now is the perfect time to establish a future opener, but they're wasting games getting Hayden 'settled' to what end? Actually forget it, I believe it's time another team wins the world cup anyway. Keep him, then NZ or SA will have a slightly better chance of raising their first cup.

I've changed my mind, keep Hayden. You never know, all the new Caribbean pitches might be nothing but roads and he'll come good. I would have no problem with that, as soon as he helps the team win games I'll be nothing but positive.

Mark waugh has recently made a comment that australia should take tait to the world cup because he will extract extra bounce and will reverse the ball on the rough pitches there as he is the best exponent of the art in the country.I also think he will be handy in those conditions.

jacques scored a ton against the tassies today and still is batting on 122, Ed cowan also made 103 seems like a flat track to me, but atleast jacques is getting into some sort of form. The bells have started ringing for haydos the game on sunday will be very important for him.

That's irrelevant to your suggestion that he's "never been a great batsman."
I said one day batsman, and I don't make my assessments based on ICC rankings, which I don't think are accurate anyway. He was never the best one day batsman in the world, those rankings have no bearing on context.

I think the ICC ratings system is very good. What context are you talking about? The ICC ratings take into account:

* runs scored
* ratings of the opposing bowling attack; the higher the combined ratings of the attack, the more value i s given to the batsman’s innings (in proportion)
* the level of run-scoring in the match, and the team’s innings total
* the result. Batsmen who score highly in victories receive a bonus. That bonus will be higher for highly rated opposition teams (i.e. win bonus against the current Australia team is higher than the bonus against Zimbabwe.)
* Batsmen gain significant credit for rapid scoring in ODIs. They only get a small amount of credit for being not out (because a not out batsman is, by definition, batting at the end of the innings when the value of his wicket is low)
* Big scores or wicket hauls against very weak nations get much less credit than the same performances against the main ODI countries.

Nah, there's no way he was the best OD batsman in the world. Don't really care for the ICC rankings myself, but he's always struggled to rotate strike. There's no doubt he can muscle a ball to the boundary, but if you hit rough patches by jeez it's hard to get form back if you can't nudge singles.

Australia needed a grand total of under three runs per over to win. There really isn't any incentive for Hayden to play a run a ball innings. Instead he got himself some good time in the middle and some confidence to take into the next match. I don't really understand the fuss..,
That is one view and being there watching yesterday I think there is something to what you say.
However there is plenty of evidence of late that he couldn't have gone up a gear if he had wanted to, I reckon that is what many here are saying.
Personally at that point I was grateful for a little bit of unpredictability and a slightly longer game.

Jaques for the Chappell-Hadlee series? Currently unbeaten on 172. Given he'll be indisposed representing NSW for the next game and there's only two more after that before the finals I can't see him getting picked during this series, but if Hayden doesn't make some big runs they might make the switch for the NZ series, ahead of the WC.

50 in a one dayer and a big hundred in a four dayer are good signs, anyway.

That he scored a lot of his runs in small chases with a lot of not outs, but tended to leave it to the rest of the batting order when it really mattered.

Really i don't see jacques making it to the side at present because if hayden fails again the immediate replacement is Shane watson which is fair enough considering he is a multi utility player for australia and how fair it would be on jacques to bring him into the setup just for 3 games in new zealand and ask him to start performing for australia at the biggest stage of them all the world cup.
