Round 1: Pool B - West Indies v England
Scorecard
Ball by Ball
England crashed out of the Champions Trophy at the hands of an inspired West Indies team at Chandigarh. The pitch at hand was not one the bowlers would like to remember, and both teams started poorly with the ball. However the West Indies bowlers came out on top, looking more dangerous at crucial times in the game.
England dropped Plunkett to accommodate Ravi Bopara in an attempt to strengthen the batting. It would prove a crucial, but ultimately fruitless move. The West Indies openers bolted out of the gate against James Anderson and Stuart Broad. Broad in particular was slammed back to earth after his 5-wicket haul against Zimbabwe. On this occasion Chris Gayle and Devon Smith took 23 runs from his first two overs.
Flintoff was hastened into the attack, only to have Gayle dropped by Trescothick with the third ball he bowled. Gayle belted the following ball to the cover boundary for four, then drove down the ground for 3 runs. In Flintoff's following over he had the last say, bowling Gayle for 41. Shivnarine Chanderpaul came to the crease, and he and Devon Smith eased the pace of scoring. From 80-1 at the end of the 10th over, Collingwood and Flintoff dragged back the rate, that the hundred came up in the 18th over.
Devon Smith got to 50 from 43 balls and continued to attack until he was lbw to Bopara for 79. Chanderpaul took his cue to accelerate, smashing consecutive boundaries off Vaughan long hops. Two balls later, Trescothick put down a second chance, this time off Samuels.
Chanderpaul raised his 50 against Bopara, then played on a ball later. Trescothick dropped a third chance - Samuels again - to start Bopara's next over, as the young man continued to impress with the ball. His next over fell away swiftly, however, and cost 18 runs with a wide, a noball, a six and two byes in the mix. But in the final stretch the West Indies attempted to accelerate, only to be denied by some sharp and clever bowling by the England pacers.
Bravo, Sarwan and Dwayne Smith all made decent contributions though, and a very good score of 305-5 was the end result, though considerably less than what appeared likely at one stage. Bopara took 2-44 from 7 overs. Aside from Flintoff, he was the best bowler on show.
England realized the urgency of the situation and started accordingly. Trescothick and Vaughan scored 26 runs from the first 3 overs, then Vaughan was out driving loosely outside the offstump. Trescothick thwacked Collymore into the midwicket stands, and he and Bell kept the momentum with England. It took a sparkling catch by Bravo to pull the West Indies back. Dwayne Smith the bowler, Trescothick was caught at backward point for a quickfire 41.
Bell and Pietersen then combined to score 14 from the remaining 5 balls in the over. Some 12 runs came off the next Bravo over with a continued assault by Bell. Powell then returned to the attack to immediate effect. Pietersen flicked into the safe hands of Dwayne Smith at midwicket, out for 7. The spin of Dave Mohammed assisted the pace of Powell well in checking the England scoring rate. The pressure resulted with a missed paddle sweep and the tame dismissal of Bell for 67.
Mohammed followed up with the wicket of Collingwood for 35 and Flintoff was run out before he could cause any real damage. Nixon was lbw to Bravo and Bopara was left with the tail for company. His bowling was outstanding and his batting equally so, Bopara scored 36 from 41 balls. And when Monty Panesar launched Bravo for six, the game still appeared to be alive. Powell came back for a third spell and broke a 51-run partnership for the 8th wicket. Somewhat anticlimactic, the final two wickets fell in the next two overs, sealing victory by 36 runs for the West Indies.
