While there is talk of Murali getting 700, the positive and negative side of it, there are loads of negatives for the Sri Lankan team. Imagine, this team stutters along to win a series against a weak Test team, and seems far too dependent on a few players. Looking at the stat sheets, we find Sangakkara scoring over 400 and Mahela, over 300. That's just about as much as the rest of the batting put together. While the positives are there in Vaas and Prasanna getting runs, the rest of the batting has been way behind the top two.
The bowling stats look a lot worse than those sub-20 averages suggest. Murali got 26 in three matches, and that's a little less than how much all the others got together. Malinga got 12 in three, Dilhara eight in four and Maharoof a single, solitary wicket for 58 runs. If this is how the team performs against a Test target team, their prospects outside of Sri Lanka look bleak. We might just see teams post giant totals over 400 regularly, despite Muralitharan bowling over 40 overs an innings. It's a pity, the other great spinner of this era doesn't have the support he needs.
