Re: Ferguson, think we’re overlooking that not only was he injured on test debut, he was injured for a good chunk of last season too, and then of course injured this season and missed the T20 WC.

So, since injury on test debut, he has neither played a FC match nor had a non-injury ravaged season.

I don’t think there’s some sort of philosophical objection to selecting him at play, I think he’s genuinely either been injured or not been fit to play red ball cricket.

IMO the whole Ajaz thing is a furphy. I would have included him in the squad instead of Henry and played him if one of the four quicks was injured but first choice was the attack with four quicks and rightly so.

Also we're talking about missing out on picking a spinner when our batting just got demolished on day 5 by... two seam bowlers. There was 'occasional assistance' for Mehidy which is what people say when they imagine the batsman suffered the slightest uncertainty in NZ before playing the slow turn on the back foot from the middle of the bat. Mehidy took 4 wickets in the test, all tail-enders of which three were chipped catches - hardly ripping a side apart with turn and bounce.

Ajaz would have been tidy because he is a good bowler, and may have snaffled a wicket or two, but the conditions would have only provided him with mild assistance and prior to the test I expected all four seamers to do well.

He does average 16 in FC cricket, so it's weird he's here yet at all. I rate him though, I even gave him a shoutout in the "young players you rate no-one has heard of" thread or whatever it's called.
But do you think he’ll do well in tests if shoed in next test? He can’t do worse than say Saif or even Sandman but he’s totally unknown quantity in longer version

The signs have been there. They've been increasingly hard to beat at home and have had wins over the likes of Australia.
I actually feel like they'd dropped off again after a promising period a few years ago and after that dreadful loss to Pakistan recently I thought they might be in for a few years of being just poor again as senior players disappeared and newer ones took a while to find their feet. I'm not sure I'd expect them to start winning lots of overseas tests straight away just because this happened, but I really hope it can be a watershed moment for them to go on the rise again

County Cricket correctly gets roasted a lot now, but I did hear the comms say Will Young credits it for improving him.

Given he has developed a bit of a big front pad over the years, opening the batting against hoopy medium pace on interesting decks would have made him very aware of it and unlike a lot of County bats he has the confidence in himself gained from playing on flat era NZ domestic decks and for NZ A to push through the struggle.

I still don't think he's a true test opener but he is definitely in our 6 best batsmen (Williamson, Conway, Latham, Young, Nicholls and then someone from Taylor, Phillips and Mitchell).

I feel like a big part of overseas players going to the CC is for them to spend those few weeks in a professional set up and focusing on specific areas in their game they want to improve.

Of course situations will differ, but I think the point is the quality of the CC being questionable at times does not mean it isn’t a great learning ground for players who come in for short periods of time.

Did we select the squad for the second test yet or nah?

Re: Ajaz. If he was averaging 25 with the bat he would most likely be playing. NZ can afford to have the luxury of a spinner to tie up an end if they can also contribute runs.

Forecast for Chch pretty poor on Day 4 and 5. NZ may only have 3 days to try and square the series ?

Especially after we lose the toss and are inserted again.

Kane made a deal with the devil for the WTC final. We will lose every toss for the next 10 years.

Went away on a holiday, the regular yearly time when I have full dedication to the family and keep off from cricket other than couple of glances at CW (when I get coverage on cellphone in some remote place) or have to rely on newspaper. I have to confess I haven't seen a result like this in many years. Bangladesh coming on the back of two losses to Pakistan at home and most wickets given to Pakistan fast bowlers then absolutely smashing us. That's some result and will be remembered for a very log time. No chance of going back and watching ball by ball. Highlights won't do justice. I guess I have to read the posts to get a real feel for the test match. Awesome result for Bangladesh. Looks like they grinded us to halt with the bat and bowled like experts on our decks.

Have read here and there the conditions were not suitable for faster bowlers but then I see 28 wickets to fast bowlers. I'm a bit confused.

Is this the new dawn for Bangladesh? They have been playing international cricket for the last 22 years. Obviously the win had to come but it has come in one of the hardest places for any international sides to tour. We had a run of like 17, 18 games with no loss.

There's loads of top class overseas recently who have been terrible in CC then gone back to being great in tests. Standard isn't that bad

The 13 squad is usually for entire series, so yes.

Stuff comments seem to point to two players not performing. Blundell and Ravindra. Were they really that bad? Rachin bowling reasonable number of overs for once but not effective enough. Not effective because he bowled **** or Bangladesh were better? Was Blundell that bad as they are making out to be? He's not that bad to be honest. He can play both pace and spin very well. Perhaps the move from opening to no.6 still having some after effect and he's still trying to bat like an opener rather than play his shots?

the 13 men squad is chosen already and don't see a point in playing a spinner at Hagley. Darryl Mitchell will come in for Rachin. I guess that's the only change required.
