Anyone listen to radiosport today? It was great fun. We had such thoughts as:

- Daniel Vettori is taking over New Zealand cricket and picking all his buddies
- Our best cricketers only care about themselves and how much money they can make (IPL)
- Jacob Oram sucks (Best comment of the day tbh)
- Justin Vaughn doesn't know what he's doing and he's too scared to stand up to anyone
- Selectors have no clue how to pick a team if they're picking players like Ingram and Hopkins

There was however plenty of love for Scott Styris.

TBH I would not be surprised if Bangaldesh beat New Zealand in the one day series with the bowlers that have been selected, McKay and Butler can be very expensive on there day, Southee's still a fairly average one day bowler and Tuffey can go for a few when the batting team goes after him.

Definitely our 4 most proven - no question about that. But when you look at his last 7 ODI's(44 runs@6.29) you can see why the selectors want to try other options in the batting department. Don't get me wrong I am to say the least appalled that he was left out of the T20 side, but am happy to see him miss out on the ODI side. Broom has earnt an extended run at number 5. I don't care what people say about Broom's lack of ODI numbers he has batted higher than six only twice in his 16 ODI caps to date which is not where a top order player should be. Besides if he happened to fail they would merely go back to piggy

Honestly 7 matches is pretty much nothing, especially when they were spread out over several extended breaks which were themselves down to poor selection!

Broom should never be in the team when Styris is available as there's simply no way he has ever done enough to overtake Styris. The argument about whether Broom would have done better up the order is kinda irrelevant imo because either way, there's absolutely no case that I can think of for saying he's a better ODI bat than Styris.

To me it's pretty much analogous to dropping, say, Ross Taylor for Shanan Stewart. One of our proven best ODI players has been dropped inexplicably for a next-cab-off-the-rank. Only difference imo is Styris is 30-something and funny looking, and maybe a bit of a douche?

I liked how he agreed with the caller who said Nathan McCullum is rubbish and should be dropped in the T20 team for Jeetan Patel.

McCullum - better batsman, better fielder and is more economical than Patel by about 1.5 runs per over thus far in their respective T20I careers.

Really strange that Styris has been left out, he has been in pretty good nick lately. As for "ODI's(44 runs@6.29", well yeah when he is picked out of season/hasn't player for a while/out of form ... Gezzz it doesn't take a genious to work out if someone has proven himself at the highest level and is currently in form and fit then he should be a automatic selection, but nah "build for the world cup" and never pick on form regardless of age as we seem to do year after year.

but in the end i think our best chance would of been if NZC had hired the 'undie bomber' to delay Obrien's flight out of NZ.

Apparently he is a 'great character' - Greatbach.

McKay doesn't seem that bad a choice to me over Arnel, he offers more pace + left arm, could be a good punt.

Was Arnel ever really going to set the world on fire, he's another honest toiler isn't he? We're fine for those.

Arnel getting overlooked with Tuffey in the team is probably fair enough tbh. Arnel is probably a little quicker but they both do pretty much the same job.

Of course, but the difference is Guptill will most likely be dropped if he doesn't perform in the test against Bangladesh, McIntosh is safe until after the Australian series IMO, no matter what he does against Bangladesh. The worst thing that could happen for Guptill's short term test career (and this might sound crazy to some) is if he was to rack up a 100+ score against Bangladesh and keep his place in the team against Australia. I have no doubt he'll fail badly in the test matches against the Aussie's if he plays as at the moment he has far too many "technical" problems in his defensive game, as well as not knowing how to build a proper innings, Johnson and co would have a field day.

Nigel Yeldon seems to think Andy McKay was picked for the same reason Trent Boult was picked last year, to give the Black Caps batsmen practice against a left arm quick before facing Mitchell Johnson and now Doug Bollinger. He seems to think Boult was never actually in the running to play against Australia last year and McKay is exactly the same pick.

That's a big call tbh, but it is actually believable.

In 13 ODIs against New Zealand, Johnson has 15 wickets (BB 3/51), at an average of 38.80 and a strike rate of 42.80 and an economy rate of 5.43. In the three ODIs in New Zealand he has gone for more then 7 an over with an average over 64! For some reason in ODIs, the New Zealand batsmen have actually done well against Johnson. Compared to his records against India and England in ODIs, is very good (averages under 24 against both teams).

Haha wow. That bastion of all things on the nose sporting wise, Radio Sport, with another gem. What a bunch of waffle. Did Mark Watson add in with his 2 cents about how McKay could benefit from watching a real sportsman, like Cameron Brown?

Up there with this article - Arnel's Black Cap run paused - cricket - sport | Stuff.co.nz - where McKay's 'alarmingly high' 5.79 an over is balanced against Brent Arnel's apparently significantly more parsimonious 5.46. And where the writer interviews his typewriter about Arnel's fielding and batting, while failing to realise that McKay is on the same level with both, and possibly even worse.
