***Official*** Bangladesh in New Zealand

I don't like the thought of Cumming and How opening against Bangladesh, especially where if they succeed they're going to get absolutely done over by Sidebottom, Hoggard and company when England come.

I don't see how someone like Bell can be left out with the form he's in currently?

And Gillespie, why do we keep picking him time after time? Is he the new Hamish Marshall?
Gillespie should be picked for tests. He's definitely more of a long format bowler than a one day bowler where he is rubbish. How many New Zealanders have taken a 5'fer on debut? I believe Gillespies were the best figures by an NZ bowler on debut but I could be mistaken.

AM Moir - 6/155
GF Cresswell - 6/168
PJ Wiseman - 2/61 & 5/82
BR Taylor - 5/86
MR Gillespie 5/136
Sounds about right. I remember one of the commentators saying he would've had the best figures if he had taken the final wicket. Thats why I got a bit confused.

Vettori is not world class test player. ODI's - 2020, he is up there, but he does not take enough wickets in tests. I think someone else deserves a chance. Also there are a number of tests in NZ, where you dont even want a spinner in the team at all.
Patel's average is under 40. Also he does not get much of a chance to work on this anymore, as he is always in the NZ squad. Patel has not played a FC match for over a year now. Dec 14 2006 was his last appearance.

To be fair to Styris, his ODi from has been good - mixed up with test cricket. only 1 score above 54 in his last 22 innings, and only 4 above 40 in the last 22.

Fleming is hardly our best batsman in the last decade. Richardson was miles ahead of any other NZ player
*Loads shotgun*

Yes Richarson was bloody good but he could never wipe a team of the park like Fleming can.

Yes, 9 centuries in 13 years would certainly show that. And when has Fleming stood up and won us a Test?

Not going to argue if he's "better" than Richardson, but Richardson easily made the best of his abilities between the two. If Fleming is our best player in the last decade, it says a hell of a lot about our other batsmen (i.e., how bloody poor they are).

I'm sick of people going on about how Styris hasn't scored a century in X amount of years. FFS he's batted in 6 Tests since his century against the West Indies, and now people want him replaced? Goes to show how dire the public can be with this sort of thing. He had a poor Test series in South Africa, but so did all of our batsmen (with the exception of Fleming and Vettori). Not to mention the fact he did well in the SA and Australia ODIs, and has a few runs under his belt against Bangladesh already.

This Dylan Cleaver guy can't have much of an idea, going by the following comment "So instead of asking have we got the attack to trouble Mohammad Ashraful, Aftab Ahmed and Tushar Imran, they must ask whether the likes of O'Brien and Gillespie are a match for Michael Vaughan, Paul Collingwood and Kevin Pietersen." Does he realise Tushar Imran is possibly the worst Test batsmen in history? Not to mention that Gillespie actually got a 5'fer on Test debut.

But Fleming is more dynamic and destructive than Richardson. There have been many instances where he has stood up and won us a test, not through centuries all the time but also there have been games where he has scored heavily and the rest of the team has collapsed.

I would agree that Richardson made the best of his abilites. That is beyond doubt. Fleming has always had an issue with conversion rates but he's had a hell of alot of fifties (CBF looking up how many). I never said Fleming was our best in the decade, I just disagreed with him being lesser than Richardson. Our best test batsman in the last decade would probably be very close between Fleming and Astle with Richardson a close third. Apart from those three, Styris and McMillan, no batsman has cemented their place in the side. (Cairns is an allrounder so I'm not counting him in here)

AWTA. To top it all off, Murray Deaker said on the radio the other day the press are far too nice to the black caps.

The Black caps do have issues with the top order - I agree the second match with Bangladesh depicted a different story, however, have we forgotten what happened in Australia and South Africa? Yes, Australia and South Africa are superior. But bashing Bangladesh, I mean lets me honest is no Australia.

And I guess it goes back to the player stock, New Zealand does not have the population advantage as Australia do.
Another factor is having the winning attitude and backing it up with a solid bat, ball and fielding performance.

What I'm getting at is this series is perhaps good for regaining confidence, but are the blackcaps truly that good? in comparison to the top sides? They are surely capable, no doubt about it.

The true test will be against england. Let us see what the blackcaps are learned from the recent tournments with australia, south africa... Blackcaps have to start wining consistently outside of NZ!

Talent wise, we're not as good as most of the sides in world cricket. But as a team (in the past at least) we've usually been somewhere around the top 4 as far as ODI's go, simply because reasonably average players would gel together to do something special. The second last CH series for instance.

Does anyone know the fitness progress of Shane Bond?

Will he be fit for the tests vs. Bangladesh?
I'm fairly sure he's ruled himself out of any games against Bangladesh in order to be fully prepared for the England series.

I don't think Styris is the batsman he once was, TBH. This isn't based on how long it's been since he scored a test ton, admittedly, but I'd consider dropping him and he was once my favourite cricketer. I think Fulton, Fleming and Sinclair are better middle order batsmen than he is (at least at the current time), and I don't think he offers enough with the ball given his knee injuries to justify getting picked ahead of Oram (or a bowler, shifting Oram to 7, McCullum to 8 etc). Would he make a better opener than Cumming, How, Papps and Bell? Maybe, but it's not a road I'd go down again after trying it with so many other middle order players and watching it fail miserably. He'd be my 12th man.

Really? I thought I read somewhere that he was out of the England series too and was aiming to be fit for the Black Caps tour of England.

He is not in great form but for people to say they would rather How or any of these 4 to play before him staggers me, In the recent tour of Australia,, How was terrible, looked totally out of his depth and never looked like scoring, all he did was clog up an end and put pressure on the rest of the top order. Styris looked very good in a couple of his innings. Its one thing to bash around these terrible attacks (Bangladesh and Co) but when Nz come up against the likes of England, Australia and Sth Africa How, Papps and Cumming will continue to lookout of their depth.

Would be a huge mistake dropping Styris IMO.

Styris is obviously a better batsman than How, but Styris is not an opener, which was my point. Styris would look out of his depth opening against Australia as well.

Could not do any worse than How and that is the point, if you have to select who you want opening and in the side who would you honestly pick? How or Styris?

Personally i would back Styris to do a much better job than How up the top of the order.

Asking Styris to open would be similar to the dire decision India made by asking Dravid to open, opening in test cricket is tough job and specialist opener is always better man for the job, asking a middle order batsman to open almost is asking for trouble.

why drop sinclair, he was brought over to help in rsa because of injuries and form of some players and preformed well with a 78 and 32* in the only two inn he plyed in in aust his preformance wasnt exceptional we must admit.. however nz players mainly the top order who suffered at the hands of rsa and aust. are milking every chance they can get off this minor team.. while he sits at 6.. they know as well as all of us here.. give him a chance up the order against thisbanga attack and he'll prob do just as good or even better... on top of that sinclair was contracted to be a test player for nz... initailly anyhow...
