Chittagong, BSSRA Stadium: Chittagong, with one first innings wicket remaining, lead Barisal by 303 runs
Chittagong* 303-9 (89.4)
Masumud Dowla 34, Dhiman Ghosh 85, Faisal Hossain 49, Waseluddin Ahmed 34; Ali Arman 3-56, Arafat Salahuddin 2-24, Ishraq Sonet 2-73

Third placed Chittagong made a strong start against fourth placed Barisal, with wicket-keeper Dhiman Ghosh striking 85 from just 99 balls. He shared partnerships of 60 with Masumud and 69 with Ehsanul.

Dhaka, Dhanmondi Cricket Stadium: Khulna, with five first innings wickets remaining, lead Sylhet by 237 runs
Khulna* 237-5 (92)
Sajjadul Hasan 75, Manjural Islam Rana 82*, Mohammad Salim 22*; Nabil Samad 2-59

Bottom side Khulna made a solid if unspectacular start to their clash with Sylhet. Sajjadul typified the day's performance, his 75 taking 223 balls, and he shared in a stand of 83 with Islam Rana. All four wickets fell to the Sylhet slow bowlers.

Rajshahi: Dhaka, with four first innings wickets remaining, lead Rajshahi by 194 runs.
Dhaka 194-6 (90)

Uttam Sarkar 42, Shamsur Rehman 36, Marshall Ayub 49*; Suhrawadi Shuvo

Dhaka struggled after being put in by Rajshahi and limped along at little over two runs per over. All the Dhaka batsmen made a start, none however have as yet been converted to a fifty and much rests on how young Marshall Ayub can handle the tail. Uttam made his highest score of the season, batting for 89 balls and striking seven fours before falling leg before to Mushfiqur Rahman.

Chittagong, BSSRA Stadium: Barisal, with two first innings wickets remaining, trail Chittagong by 80 runs
Chittagong* 313 (92.4)

Masumud Dowla 34, Dhiman Ghosh 85, Faisal Hossain 49, Waseluddin Ahmed 34; Ali Arman 3-56, Arafat Salahuddin 2-28, Ishraq Sonet 3-74
Barisal 233-8 (85)
Hannan Sarkar 50, Abul Bashar 35, Shahin Hossain 22*, Ahsanullah Hasan 20*; Shabbir Khan 4-83, Saju Datta 3-44

Barisal owe a lot to Hannan Sakar, the only true star in their limited lineup, who opened the innings with 50 before the middle-order offered little resistance to the spinners. Barisal were in deep water at 195-8 before a steady unbroken stand of 38 between Shahin and Ahsanullah saw them through to the close without further loss. More wickets for Shabbir Khan, the off-spinner who took seven in the second round against Sylhet.

Dhaka, Dhanmondi Cricket Stadium: Sylhet, with six first innings wickets remaining, trail Khulna by 138 runs
Khulna* 306 (121.1)
Sajjadul Hasan 75, Manjural Islam Rana 120 (213b, 20x4), Mohammad Salim 25; Nabil Samad 4-66, Alok Kapali 3-54
Sylhet 168-4 (58)
Golam Rahman 47, Rajin Saleh 49*, Golam Mabud 30*; Dolar Mahmud 2-35

Islam Rana completed his first century of the season, well supported by Sadik Khan, as Khulna put up a decent total. Sylhet however fought back hard, led by openers Golam and Imtiaz Hossain (20) who hit two sixes apiece. Alok Kapali fell cheaply, but an unbeaten partnership of 50 between Rajin and Golam, who hit a ton in the previous round, consolidated their position. An intriguing final two days await.

Rajshahi: Rajshahi, with six first innings wickets remaining, trail Dhaka by 136 runs
Dhaka 286 (123.2)
Uttam Sarkar 42, Shamsur Rehman 36, Marshall Ayub 52, Mohammad Sharif 47; Suhrawadi Shuvo 5-58, Mohammad Shahzada 2-38, Alamgir Kabir 2-61
Rajshahi 150-4 (55)
Jahurul Islam 30, Mushfiqur Rahman 44*, Hasanuzzaman 26, Suhrawadi Shuvo 23*; Mosharraf Hossain 2-42

Dhaka's tail (Sharif in particular) wagged, but Rajshahi began solidly in reply. Mushfiqur Rahman, a surprise choice at number four, played confidently for his 44, as did Shuvo, who earlier completed a five wicket haul.

Chittagong, BSSRA Stadium: Barisal, with ten second innings wickets remaining, require 375 runs to beat Chittagong
Chittagong* 313 (92.4)
Masumud Dowla 34, Dhiman Ghosh 85, Faisal Hossain 49, Waseluddin Ahmed 34; Ali Arman 3-56, Arafat Salahuddin 2-28, Ishraq Sonet 3-74
Barisal 238 (88.5)
Hannan Sarkar 50, Abul Bashar 35, Shahin Hossain 22*, Ahsanullah Hasan 20*; Shabbir Khan 5-86, Saju Datta 3-46
Chittagong 299-8 declared (73.4)
Tamim Iqbal 76, Gazi Salahuddin 126 (198b, 16x4, 2x6), Ehsanul Haque 54; Tapash Ghosh 4-88, Ahsanullah Hasan 3-90

Chittagong set themselves up for a victory after day three, thanks to a brilliant century from Gazi and a hard-hitting 86-ball 76 which leaves Barisal chasing an improbable 375. The away side lasted less than three overs in the morning session, as Shabbir completed a five-for. Gazi, Tamim and Ehsanul then destroyed the Barisal pace attack, leaving the bulk of the overs to be bowled by the spinners.

Dhaka, Dhanmondi Cricket Stadium: Khulna, with seven second innings wickets remaining, lead Sylhet by 173 runs
Khulna* 306 (121.1)
Sajjadul Hasan 75, Manjural Islam Rana 120 (213b, 20x4), Mohammad Salim 25; Nabil Samad 4-66, Alok Kapali 3-54
Sylhet 270 (101.1)
Golam Rahman 47, Rajin Saleh 92, Golam Mabud 62; Sadik Khan 4-85, Manjural Islam Rana 3-54, Dolar Mahmud 2-55
Khulna 137-3 (49)
Sajjadul Hasan 67*, Manjural Islam Rana 29*; Hasibul Hossain 2-58

A draw looks the likely outome at the Dhanmondi after a slow-go effort from Sylhet on the third day killed the match. Islam Rana gave away a miserly 54 runs from 44.1 overs, with 20 maidens. Once the 110-run stand between Saleh and Golam Mabud was broken there was little resistance against the Khulna spinners. Sajjadul then completed his second fifty of the game as Khulna consolidated their position.

Rajshahi: Dhaka, with eight second innings wickets remaining, lead Rajshahi by 234 runs
Dhaka 286 (123.2)
Uttam Sarkar 42, Shamsur Rehman 36, Marshall Ayub 52, Mohammad Sharif 47; Suhrawadi Shuvo 5-58, Mohammad Shahzada 2-38, Alamgir Kabir 2-61
Rajshahi* 200 (85)
Jahurul Islam 30, Mushfiqur Rahman 46, Hasanuzzaman 26, Suhrawadi Shuvo 40; Mosharraf Hossain 6-59, Mohammad Shakil 2-38
Dhaka 148-2 (60)
Javed Omar 28, Uttam Sarkar 73*, Shamsur Rahman 35*; Suhrawadi Shuvo 2-58

Dhaka look set to claim the bragging rights in the top of the table clash, after Mosharraf Hossain's six wicket haul claimed a crucial first innings lead, which was capitalised on by the batsman, particularly Uttam Sarkar, who faced 180 balls for his unbeaten 73. An early declaration tomorrow, perhaps after an hour or so of throwing the bat around, should be Dhaka's aim from this point.

Chittagong, BSSRA Stadium: Chittagong (4pts) drew with Barisal (2pts)
Chittagong* 313 (92.4)
Masumud Dowla 34, Dhiman Ghosh 85, Faisal Hossain 49, Waseluddin Ahmed 34; Ali Arman 3-56, Arafat Salahuddin 2-28, Ishraq Sonet 3-74

Barisal 293-6 (91)
Humayun Kabir 73*, Arafat Salahuddin 139 (157b, 14x4, 7x6); Tareq Aziz 2-37, Shabbir Khan 2-94

A brilliant innings from an in-form Arafat Salahuddin rescued Barisal from what looked like certain defeat at 68-5 after 35 overs. It was then that Arafat and Humayun Kabir, who resisted for 182 balls, came together and put on 203 for the sixth wicket.

Dhaka, Dhanmondi Cricket Stadium: Khulna (4pts) drew with Sylhet (2pts)
Khulna* 306 (121.1)
Sajjadul Hasan 75, Manjural Islam Rana 120 (213b, 20x4), Mohammad Salim 25; Nabil Samad 4-66, Alok Kapali 3-54
Sylhet 270 (101.1)
Golam Rahman 47, Rajin Saleh 92, Golam Mabud 62; Sadik Khan 4-85, Manjural Islam Rana 3-54, Dolar Mahmud 2-55
Khulna 272-9 declared (111.1)
Sajjadul Hasan 69, Manjural Islam Rana 38, Asadullah Khan 44, Mohammad Salim 29; Hasibul Hossain 2-72, Golam Mabud 3-46
Sylhet 87-3 (22)
Imtiaz Hossain 48, Rezaul Haque 26*

An ultra-conservative declaration from Manjural Islam Rana condemned the game to a draw, although Khulna claim four points to Sylhet's two courtesy of a first innings lead.

Rajshahi: Rajshahi (2pts) drew with Dhaka (4pts)
Dhaka 286 (123.2)
Uttam Sarkar 42, Shamsur Rehman 36, Marshall Ayub 52, Mohammad Sharif 47; Suhrawadi Shuvo 5-58, Mohammad Shahzada 2-38, Alamgir Kabir 2-61
Rajshahi* 200 (85)
Jahurul Islam 30, Mushfiqur Rahman 46, Hasanuzzaman 26, Suhrawadi Shuvo 40; Mosharraf Hossain 6-59, Mohammad Shakil 2-38
Dhaka 227-4 (88)
Javed Omar 28, Uttam Sarkar 77, Shamsur Rahman 58*, Al Sahariar 34; Suhrawadi Shuvo 3-79
Rajshahi 165-2 (55)
Jahurul Islam 100*, Farhad Hossain 34

A superb batting surface prevented an early Dhaka declaration, but even so Shamsur's 196-ball 58 was taking the pedestrian pace to a new level. Jahurul then stroked his way to a first century of the year, after a superb tour of Pakistan with the Academy side. He added 111 for the second wicket with Farhad.

Rajshahi: Rajshahi, with three first innings wickets remaining, lead Barisal by 277 runs
Barisal* 93 (54)
Arafat Salahuddin 37; Mohammad Shahzada 5-21, Suhrawadi Shuvo 5-30
Rajshahi 370-7 (128)
Jahurul Islam 139 (371b, 18x4, 2x6), Anisur Rahman 31, Naeem Islam 126 (322b, 17x4, 2x6), Mushfiqur Rahim 29, Hasanuzzaman 13*, Mohammad Shahzada 1*; Sajidul Islam 2-34, Ahsanullah Hasan 2-80

The in-form pairing of Shahzada and Shuvo skittled Barisal for a paltry 93 on the opening day, and then set about constructing a huge total as the top order fired. The visitors were reduced to 7-5 in the fifth over, with Shahzada claiming the first five to fall, before a revival of sorts was staged by Arafat Salahuddin. Shuvo polished off the tail to finish with figures of 16-8-30-5; Shahzada's figures read 15-4-21-5. A mammoth third wicket stand between Jahurul and Naeem worth 215 run then dominated the Rajshahi reply as they look to move top with Dhaka struggling against Sylhet.

Khulna: Khulna, with seven first innings wickets remaining, trail Chittagong by 8 runs
Chittagong* 241 (83)
Tamim Iqbal 34, Gazi Salahuddin 57, Faisal Hossain 66*; Manjurul Islam Rana 6-47
Khulna 233-3 (95)
Nazmus Sadat 46, Sajjadul Hasan 42, Saghir Hossain 29; Jamaluddin Ahmed 42*, Manjurul Islam Rana 59*; Shabbir Khan 2-66

Chittagong chose to bat first on the opening day, but the middle order crumbled to Islam Rana's left-arm spin after Gazi Salahuddin took the away side to 116-1. Although none of the Khulna top three made fifties, all made solid scores, and a sizeable 104-run partnership between Jamaluddin and Islam Rana put them in command after day two.

Dhaka: Dhaka, with two first innings wickets remaining, trail Sylhet by 173 runs
Sylhet* 365 (104.2)
Imtiaz Hossain 34, Rajin Saleh 100 (192b, 16x4), Alok Kapali 173 (254b, 21x4, 1x6); Mohammad Sharif 5-135, Mosharraf Hossain 4-102
Dhaka 193-8 (68.1)
Uttam Sarkar 61, Marshall Ayub 38, Mosharraf Hossain 14*, Arafat Sunny 13*; Nazmul Hossain 3-41, Nabil Samad 4-42

Kapali and Saleh demonstrated their international class to take Sylhet to a hefty score, despite the next highest score being just 34 and just one other player making double-figures. Dhaka then slumped to a miserable 43-4 in reply, before Uttam Sarkar and Marshall Ayub steadied the ship.

From Dhaka Daily Star, 10 December:

Premier Cricket League from December 19
Transfers start today
Sports Reporter

The players transfers for the Premier Cricket League of the 2006-07 season begin at the Bangabandhu National Stadium today.

The three-day bourse was due to start on December 5 but the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) had to postpone it due to the political unrest and the countrywide blockade.

The transfers begin this afternoon and will run until December 12.

This year's Premier Cricket League will be divided into two parts, a Twenty20 tournament starting from December 19 followed by the main limited-overs league from January 10.

In a peculiar twist, the inter-club transfers of the footballers remain in limbo as almost the same clubs who are taking part in the cricket transfers have time and again refused to participate in the booters' bourse.

Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) has also repeatedly proved their tentativeness towards pursuing these clubs to take part in the transfers whereas the CCDM have only postponed it once due to the countrywide blockade programme.

With the likelihood of Bangla-desh travelling to Zimbabwe for a one-day series in February, the national players who are part of a 16-man pool are scheduled to play till the eighth round, if the tour goes through.

It is expected that two-time defending champions Old DOHS will once again be the team to beat as reportedly, they have retained most of their old players including pool members Abdur Razzak, Mehrab Hossain and Shahadat Hossain apart from confirming young guns Enamul Haque, Nazmul Hossain, Nadif Chowdhury, Dollar Mahmud, Nabil Samad, Shamsur Rahman and seasoned campaigner Ehsanul Haque. Veteran Akram Khan is expected to lead the side.

Last season's runners-up Sonargaon Cricketers kept most of their players as well as the inclusion of Mohammad Sharif, Marshall Ayub, Alok Kapali and Dhiman Ghosh. They let go off left-armer Nabil and seamer Tapash Baisya who moved over to his old side Mohammedan, informed club president Wasiq Rafiq.

After the last few years in the wilderness, Abahani are expected to give their fans a cause to wake up by confirming the services of 'Narail Express' Mashrafee Bin Mortuza and batsman Tushar Imran from the 16-member national pool and brining back old guard Khaled Mashud to guide players such as Nazmus Sadat, Jahurul Islam, Mahmudullah Riyad and Gazi Salahuddin.

Mohammedan are likely to lose strength of the youngsters but hung on to Habibul Bashar and Aftab Ahmed and bring Saquibul Hasan to complete the pool-quota. Pacemen Hasibul Hossain and Monjurul Islam, all-rounder Faisal Hossain and wicketkeeper Sahagir Hossain have all confirmed their place in the side that has not lifted the crown in the recent past. Add to that, Mohammedan lost the likes of Mashud and Mashrafee to arch-rivals Abahani.

Among other pool members, Syed Rasel and Forhad Reza are expected to stay at Biman, Mohammad Rafique and Mohammad Ashraful at Sonargaon, Shahriar Nafees at City Club but Sylhet captain Rajin Saleh is destined to join newcomers Partex. The newly promoted side is making a strong statement by acquiring the services of Neeyamur Rashid, Ahsanullah Hasan, Talha Jubair and Naeem Islam..

Veteran opener Javed Omar seems to be the only national player still unoccupied.

Players mentioned in the media only. Other sides (Indira Road, for example) signed relative unknowns. Asterisk denotes that the player is part of the national pool.

Bear in mind that players such as Uttam Sarkar and (I think) Nazmus Sadat kick started their careers and forced their way into the divisional sides through the Premier League. Very often the players also have more allegiance to their club rather than their division, as because most players are born in Dhaka, they are not playing for their home division. No news on overseas players as yet either.

The DPL is split into two parts this year: a Twenty20 competition from December 19, followed by the main limited overs competition from January 10. As there is not yet any scheduled inter-divisional Twenty20, this could serve as the main basis for selection for the Twenty20 World Championships.

To Add to Jumbo's post, I heard Partex has signed up Rashed Hanif, overseas player from Pakistan.

BTW, has Uttam Sarkar changed his team or does he still belong to Kalabagan KC ?

Haven't heard anything RE Kalabagan or Uttam, so I presume he's still there.

Thought I may as well type up a summary of the first Bangladesh A v Zimbabweans games. Score for the second match when it concludes tomorrow.

Mirpur, 11-12 to 13-12: Bangladesh A beat Zimbabweans by 1 wicket
Zimbabweans 146 (58.5)
SC Williams 63; Enamul Haque jnr 5-21, Mohammad Sharif 3-40, Tapash Baisya 2-30
Bangladesh A 142 (44.1)
Tushar Imran 33, Tapash Baisya 25; AJ Ireland 7-36, AG Cremer 2-17
Zimbabweans 113 (47)
SC Williams 32; Mohammad Shahzada 4-25, Mohammad Sharif 3-20, Tapash Baisya 3-39
Bangladesh A 118-9 (47.1)
AG Cremer 3-25, AJ Ireland 3-38

Bangladesh A XI: Javed Omar, Gazi Salahuddin, Rajin Saleh, Tushar Imran (c), Alok Kapali, Manjurul Islam Rana, Saghir Hossain (wk), Mohammad Sharif, Tapash Baisya, Enamul Haque jnr, Mohammad Shahzada.

In a low-scoring match on a substandard Mirpur wicket, Bangladesh A appeared to be cruising to victory on the final day when Rajin Saleh and Tushar Imran were at the crease, both well set requiring just 55 for victory with nine wickets in hand. However the middle-order collapse to leave the last-wicket pair of Enamul and Shahzada to carry the home side over the finish line. The game produced only one fifty, from the in-form Sean Williams, probably the brightest star for Zimbabwe on this tour.

Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
Young Sean Williams definately carries the weight of Zimbabwe cricket on his shoulders at the moment, he had a good tour and will look to back it up when Zimbabwe next play some tough cricket. Good to see Anthony Ireland in the wickets aswell?

NCL - Half-Season Review

1. Rajshahi
P5 W3 L0 D2 PTS 22

Last year's champions are ideally placed to regain their title, with several emerging players making key contributions. The two draws came against Khulna in the rain-affected opening round and in the crucial clash with Dhaka. Elsewhere, Rajshahi have been impressive in all areas. Mohammad Shahzada has been the undisputed star of the league so far, while Suhrawadi Shuyvo has provided useful support with his slow-left arm. Batting wise, Jahurul Islam continues to impress, Naeem Islam is beginning to show his full potential and Junaid Siddique securing victory against Khulna with a superb unbeaten hundred. Rajshahi's internationals have however been disappointing, with neither Farhad Reza nor Mushfiqur Rahim producing the volume of runs expected.

250 runs: Naeem Islam (306 @ 43.71, 2x50, 1x100), Jahurul Islam (269 @89.66, 2x100), Junaid Siddique (252 @ 84.00, 1x100, 1x50).
10 wickets: Mohammad Shahzada (31 @ 14.03, 2x5i, 1x10m), Suhrawadi Shuvo (15 @ 13.26, 2x5i), Mushfiqur Rahman (13 @ 25.84, 1x5i).

2. Dhaka

Fuelled by two huge Mohammad Ashraful hundreds, including 263 against Chittagong, Dhaka racked up a pair of early victories, but their form as been indifferent since. The big clash with Rajshahi ended in stalemate, before in the most recent round as Dhaka slumped to defeat against Sylhet. Their season, and the title, however could have pivoted on the Awami League blockade, which forced the abandonment of their opening fixture against Barisal, a game which Dhaka looked set to win comfortably. Other than the brilliant Ashraful, Marshall Ayub has looked very impressive, while Mosharraf Hossain has taken big strides in the absence of Mohammad Rafique.

250 runs: Mohammad Ashraful (417 @ 83.40, 2x100), Marshall Ayub (353 @ 44.12, 1x100, 1x50).
10 wickets: Mohammad Sharif (24 @ 19.70, 2x5i, 1x10m), Mosharraf Hossain (20 @ 19.90, 1x5i), Mohammad Rafique (10 @ 14.6).

3. Chittagong
P5 W0 L1 D4 PTS 14

A solid if unspectacular start. Chittagong's opening clash with Sylhet fell to the weather, before a high-scoring draw was ground out in the return fixture. Little could save them from Ashraful's fireworks as they were crushed by an innings by Dhaka, but Barisal should have been finished off at 68-5 on the final day, whereupon Arafat Salahuddin and Shahin Hossain batted out the day. The batting, including young openers Tamim Iqbal and Gazi Salahuddin, has churned out runs at a consistant rate, but too much of the bowling workload has fallen on off-spinner Shabbir Khan.

250 runs: Gazi Salahuddin (384 @ 42.66, 1x100, 2x50), Faisal Hossain (311 @ 44.62, 1x100, 1x50), Tamim Iqbal (286 @ 31.77, 3x50), Ehsanul Haque (278 @ 30.88, 1x100, 1x50).
10 wickets: Shabbir Khan (29 @ 22.55, 3x5i, 1x10m), Tareq Aziz (13 @ 35.53).

4. Sylhet
P5 W1 L1 D3 PTS 12

Sylhet started the season quietly, with three fairly secure draws followed by two poor batting displays against an admittedly strong Rajshahi bowling attack. However, centuries for Rajin Saleh and Alok Kapali, coupled with wickets from very impressive Nabil Samad, thrust Sylhet to a memorable win against highly-fancied Dhaka. While much of the batting rests on Saleh and Kapali in the middle-order, there has been encouraging signs from Golam Mabud and Imtiaz Hossain. Tapash Baisya, after a long spell of injury, has provided both runs (including a maiden ton) and inexpensive wickets with the new-ball.

250 runs: Rajin Saleh (334 @ 47.71, 1x100, 2x50), Golam Mabud (322 @ 35.77, 1x100, 2x50), Imtiaz Hossain (318 @ 31.80, 1x50), Alok Kapali (298 @ 33.11, 1x100).
10 wickets: Nabil Samad (17 @ 20.70, 2x5i), Hasibul Hossain (12 @ 32.83), Alok Kapali (11 @ 28.81).

5. Khulna
P5 W0 L2 D3 PTS 10

A team with few real stars, Khulna have relied too much on Manjural Islam Rana with the bat so far this campaign. While the bowlers have produced enough support for their captain, only opener Sajjadul Hasan has produced the required amount of runs. Even the performances of Mashrafe Mortaza and Abdur Razzak, before they were called up by the national side, could not force a victory. Nazmus Sadat has not really fired yet at the top of the order, scoring 205 runs at just over 34. A loss to lowly Barisal confirmed their status as one of the weaker sides in the competition.

250 runs: Manjurul Islam Rana (421 @ 60.14, 2x100), Sajjadul Hasan (342 @ 42.75, 3x50).
10 wickets: Manjurul Islam Rana (15 @ 17.80, 1x5i), Dolar Mahmud (14 @ 16.50, 1x5i), Ziaur Rahman (12 @ 24.00), Sadik Khan (10 @ 24.60).

6. Barisal
P5 W1 L2 D3 PTS 10

Although regarded as the weakest side in the competition, Barisal have not made as poor a start to the league as some expected. Yes, there has been little success with the bat, but they have already had to play Rajshahi and Dhaka (twice), the strongest bowling sides in the competition. Arafat Salahuddin has been a revelation with the bat, digging his side out of holes against Khulna and Chittagong after the top order failed to provide the necessary runs, something that has been a recurring problem so far.

250 runs: Arafat Salahuddin (353 @ 44.12, 1x100, 2x50).
10 wickets: Ali Arman (17 @ 19.29, 1x5i), Sajidul Islam (16 @ 21.68, 1x5i), Ishraq Sonet (11 @ 26.36), Arafat Salahuddin (11 @ 32.81).
