NCL - Half-Season Review
1. Rajshahi
P5 W3 L0 D2 PTS 22
Last year's champions are ideally placed to regain their title, with several emerging players making key contributions. The two draws came against Khulna in the rain-affected opening round and in the crucial clash with Dhaka. Elsewhere, Rajshahi have been impressive in all areas. Mohammad Shahzada has been the undisputed star of the league so far, while Suhrawadi Shuyvo has provided useful support with his slow-left arm. Batting wise, Jahurul Islam continues to impress, Naeem Islam is beginning to show his full potential and Junaid Siddique securing victory against Khulna with a superb unbeaten hundred. Rajshahi's internationals have however been disappointing, with neither Farhad Reza nor Mushfiqur Rahim producing the volume of runs expected.
250 runs: Naeem Islam (306 @ 43.71, 2x50, 1x100), Jahurul Islam (269 @89.66, 2x100), Junaid Siddique (252 @ 84.00, 1x100, 1x50).
10 wickets: Mohammad Shahzada (31 @ 14.03, 2x5i, 1x10m), Suhrawadi Shuvo (15 @ 13.26, 2x5i), Mushfiqur Rahman (13 @ 25.84, 1x5i).
2. Dhaka
P5 W2 L1 D2 PTS 20
Fuelled by two huge Mohammad Ashraful hundreds, including 263 against Chittagong, Dhaka racked up a pair of early victories, but their form as been indifferent since. The big clash with Rajshahi ended in stalemate, before in the most recent round as Dhaka slumped to defeat against Sylhet. Their season, and the title, however could have pivoted on the Awami League blockade, which forced the abandonment of their opening fixture against Barisal, a game which Dhaka looked set to win comfortably. Other than the brilliant Ashraful, Marshall Ayub has looked very impressive, while Mosharraf Hossain has taken big strides in the absence of Mohammad Rafique.
250 runs: Mohammad Ashraful (417 @ 83.40, 2x100), Marshall Ayub (353 @ 44.12, 1x100, 1x50).
10 wickets: Mohammad Sharif (24 @ 19.70, 2x5i, 1x10m), Mosharraf Hossain (20 @ 19.90, 1x5i), Mohammad Rafique (10 @ 14.6).
3. Chittagong
P5 W0 L1 D4 PTS 14
A solid if unspectacular start. Chittagong's opening clash with Sylhet fell to the weather, before a high-scoring draw was ground out in the return fixture. Little could save them from Ashraful's fireworks as they were crushed by an innings by Dhaka, but Barisal should have been finished off at 68-5 on the final day, whereupon Arafat Salahuddin and Shahin Hossain batted out the day. The batting, including young openers Tamim Iqbal and Gazi Salahuddin, has churned out runs at a consistant rate, but too much of the bowling workload has fallen on off-spinner Shabbir Khan.
250 runs: Gazi Salahuddin (384 @ 42.66, 1x100, 2x50), Faisal Hossain (311 @ 44.62, 1x100, 1x50), Tamim Iqbal (286 @ 31.77, 3x50), Ehsanul Haque (278 @ 30.88, 1x100, 1x50).
10 wickets: Shabbir Khan (29 @ 22.55, 3x5i, 1x10m), Tareq Aziz (13 @ 35.53).
4. Sylhet
P5 W1 L1 D3 PTS 12
Sylhet started the season quietly, with three fairly secure draws followed by two poor batting displays against an admittedly strong Rajshahi bowling attack. However, centuries for Rajin Saleh and Alok Kapali, coupled with wickets from very impressive Nabil Samad, thrust Sylhet to a memorable win against highly-fancied Dhaka. While much of the batting rests on Saleh and Kapali in the middle-order, there has been encouraging signs from Golam Mabud and Imtiaz Hossain. Tapash Baisya, after a long spell of injury, has provided both runs (including a maiden ton) and inexpensive wickets with the new-ball.
250 runs: Rajin Saleh (334 @ 47.71, 1x100, 2x50), Golam Mabud (322 @ 35.77, 1x100, 2x50), Imtiaz Hossain (318 @ 31.80, 1x50), Alok Kapali (298 @ 33.11, 1x100).
10 wickets: Nabil Samad (17 @ 20.70, 2x5i), Hasibul Hossain (12 @ 32.83), Alok Kapali (11 @ 28.81).
5. Khulna
P5 W0 L2 D3 PTS 10
A team with few real stars, Khulna have relied too much on Manjural Islam Rana with the bat so far this campaign. While the bowlers have produced enough support for their captain, only opener Sajjadul Hasan has produced the required amount of runs. Even the performances of Mashrafe Mortaza and Abdur Razzak, before they were called up by the national side, could not force a victory. Nazmus Sadat has not really fired yet at the top of the order, scoring 205 runs at just over 34. A loss to lowly Barisal confirmed their status as one of the weaker sides in the competition.
250 runs: Manjurul Islam Rana (421 @ 60.14, 2x100), Sajjadul Hasan (342 @ 42.75, 3x50).
10 wickets: Manjurul Islam Rana (15 @ 17.80, 1x5i), Dolar Mahmud (14 @ 16.50, 1x5i), Ziaur Rahman (12 @ 24.00), Sadik Khan (10 @ 24.60).
6. Barisal
P5 W1 L2 D3 PTS 10
Although regarded as the weakest side in the competition, Barisal have not made as poor a start to the league as some expected. Yes, there has been little success with the bat, but they have already had to play Rajshahi and Dhaka (twice), the strongest bowling sides in the competition. Arafat Salahuddin has been a revelation with the bat, digging his side out of holes against Khulna and Chittagong after the top order failed to provide the necessary runs, something that has been a recurring problem so far.
250 runs: Arafat Salahuddin (353 @ 44.12, 1x100, 2x50).
10 wickets: Ali Arman (17 @ 19.29, 1x5i), Sajidul Islam (16 @ 21.68, 1x5i), Ishraq Sonet (11 @ 26.36), Arafat Salahuddin (11 @ 32.81).
