Cricinfo - Bailey handed Tasmania captaincy

Always obvious Bailey was going to be handed the captaincy after Marsh's resignation. Very level headed cricketer, is only 26 and yet feels like he has been around forever. I see he made his ODD debut in 2000/2001.

Not so sure on Paine as VC. Very good cricketer, still think one day he will make the Australian side if he develops more. I just don't agree on giving leadership roles to a player so young who is yet to really find himself as a cricketer.

Tasmania obviously not spoiled for choice in the leadership department. Birt was perhaps the only other option?
Paine may look like he is 18 still, but he is 24 now and played 30 odd games in both forms. I personally think it is good age to give some the vice captaincy. Bailey had it since Watson moved back to Queensland, when he was 23. And Watson was given the vice captaincy at the same age.

I can understand the reasoning behind it, and I'm sure he makes a good natural leader. Would never have been made National U/19 captain without some ability. I'm just concerned that for Paine's development, the burden of vice-captain may hinder him. Still isn't settled as a batsman, and his wicket-keeping hasn't really come on as yet.

Hope I'm proved wrong; spur him onto the next level. Rate him highly; just wish he found some consistency.

I doubt the vc should affect his game much. Looks at Hartley you barely noticed he was vc last year. The nature of Bailey's captaincy he will just run the show and Paine wont be required to focus on much more then his game. VC don't do a lot in the modern game, especially with the continually changing of captains.

Reckon it will be a positive thing, knowing his spot is secured. Even with Sean gone, with the amount of batsmen that can keep in Tasmania. He had a lot pressure last season to perform.

Victorians chasing a large target, asking a few questions of an old internet search engine, and a bloke who must've recently impressed a pretty important coach...

If Dizzy came back to the redbacks that would be awsome.
Yep the SACA's could do with a quality former Test bowler, as their bowling coach.

Excited for Bailey btw, my favourite Australian Domestic Cricketer who's never played for Australia.

That's quite surprising, I would have thought Noffke would be one of their top contracts, and definitely in the T20 if fit.

Exactly. That's why the downgraded his contract.
Yeah, I presumed so, that's why I put in the qualifier.

I guess Queensland are in a bit of a quandry at the moment with money. I wonder how much they will have to pay Symonds to keep him, even just playing the shorter form.

Poor form from Noffke.

Queensland have stuck by him through a number of injuries. Queensland have allowed Noffke to continue playing County Cricket in England, and he has rewarded them I believe two or three times with returning injured.

Messy situation.

Western Australia will snap him up. Would be of value to any state.

Queensland Bulls may lose Ashley Noffke

"We have told Ash that we think his major focus should be on the Sheffield Shield competition and we have made it clear that we believe that for his career longevity, it is best to have him concentrate on first class cricket, which is still the benchmark for our game.

"At this stage he would not be in the frame for Twenty20 selection but the opportunity would exist for him to be picked in the Ford Ranger Cup, dependant on workloads, as our four day and one-day games tend to be played back to back."
Being excluded from limited-overs cricket is quite a big thing for an older player these days, as it's a major earnings restriction. This would give Noffke little chance of playing Champion's League, for example. It would also make any lucrative overseas T20 contract a lot more difficult to pick up.

You know that would be like NSW telling Jaques he can only play FC cricket, cus he had one bad seasons with injuries. I would expect him to walk as well if we told him that. Last season Noffke struggled with injuries, but that is nothing different from what happened to Damien Wright the season before with Tasmania. Then he came back with Victoria and was one of their few fit bowlers all season. Just cus you have one bad season with injuries and your over 30, doesn't mean they should drop you from the shorter forms of game. The form that he last played for Australia.

Massive over reaction to one season with injury from Queensland. He should be leaving imo with the way he been treated by Queensland here. All they are trying to do here is justify cutting costs, as they can't afford his salary along with Symonds.
