Australia released 25 contracts, vics with hussey, hodge and whie (who we're all lucky to get contracts)means vics should be able to sign all heir players plus 1/2 new buys.
NSW well casson and jaques lose contracts but hughes and hauritz get one.
No state is a major winner out of the contracts.South australia tait loses his manou gets one.Noffke loses his.
Anyways means state can officially start the silly season and buying players now and offering contracts.
West australia will be keen to sign an opener and some pacemen.

Queensland lose out a bit going from five Australian players down to two, although only one of them (Noffke) do they have to actually contact themselves next year. They might have a bit of space for recruiting, they look very inexperienced.

Expecting few major announcements. The majority of the major moves over the previous 10 years have been backed by months of rumours.

Will be just the usual transfers such as the Maher / Day move to Tasmania. Decent club cricketers looking for their break into first class cricket.

Hayden and Watson were Australian contracted, so we don't have that luxury anymore. Reckon we might do some recruiting. There was talk of Magoffin coming back, but doubt that will happen. Our bowling stocks aren't that bad, we should be trying to recruit batsmen, with the loss of Love & Watson.

Batsmen are in short supply. Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania and possibly South Australia you would suspect are on the look for batting stocks.

WA would surely be looking for bowlers. They only had two guys with more than ten FC wickets last year.
Dorey and Magoffin where fantastic last season. Amazing haul of wickets between the two bowlers. They complemented each other so well, Dorey with his big out-swingers and Magoffin with his pace and bounce. Amazing how the supporting bowlers tailed off after the big 2.

The missing link really was Ben Edmondson. Been relatively consistent over past seasons, but his game really deteriorated last season. He is always an expensive bowler, but one of those bowlers who takes plenty of wickets. Problem is, when the wickets dry up aka 2008/2009, the economy rate still remains high.

The other pace bowlers are not the worst. Crawford looked promising in the few games he played last season. Knowles is a useful seamer who was unlucky to not play more games in Victoria. Also still hearing good reports about Nathan Coulter-Nile.

Another class bowler would be welcome at Western Australia. But they are not totally devoid of capable cricketers. Be handy to have Mitch Johnson for a game or two.

Edmondson was injured for much of last season, to be fair. He's very hot and cold as a bowler. Last year was saved (somewhat) by Brett Dorey's comeback. He seemed to peter off after his international call up, but he and Magoffin were very good last year. Ideally, Inness would have never retired after his awesome season the year before last. Was a puzzling move.

If I was to pick a weakness between the batting and the bowling, though, it would still be the bowling. I think we've got enough capable batsmen (maybe devoid of some openers after the loss of Rogers), but not a lot of fast bowling depth. I'm not sure Knowles, Davis, Crawford and the likes can provide consistent backup if Dorey, Magoffin or Edmondson break down. Heal also lacks penetration in the longer form.

West australia needs players right through their team, top to bottom, huge loss last season losing rogers and langer.
West australia looked best when they had edmonsen, dorey, magoffin, innes and kelly.

Appears as though Crosthwaite will try his luck up in Sydney, whether he gets a contract off NSW or not. Lloyd Mash still waiting to see if Tasmania are still interested in his services after they got Cowan.

Dan Wates?

Lost his contact along with their other mediocre all rounders a couple seasons back.

Dan McLauchlan perhaps? Yes best remembered for the belting Blizzard gave him in the T20 final.

Has slipped off the radar in recent seasons. Is into his early 30's now (31), so his time may have passed.

Cricinfo - Bailey handed Tasmania captaincy

Always obvious Bailey was going to be handed the captaincy after Marsh's resignation. Very level headed cricketer, is only 26 and yet feels like he has been around forever. I see he made his ODD debut in 2000/2001.

Not so sure on Paine as VC. Very good cricketer, still think one day he will make the Australian side if he develops more. I just don't agree on giving leadership roles to a player so young who is yet to really find himself as a cricketer.

Tasmania obviously not spoiled for choice in the leadership department. Birt was perhaps the only other option?
