The Ashes 2013-14 : England secure stiffer preparation | Cricket News | England in Australia - The Ashes | ESPN Cricinfo

Each state will be affected, as Ed Cowan, Phillip Hughes, Usman Khawaja, Aaron Finch and Adam Voges are among those set to appear, in addition to a selection of NSW players. By being named to face the Englishmen a week before the Test rather than playing Shield cricket, it also appears likely that none of the aforementioned batsmen will be part of the Gabba Test squad to be named on November 12.

Shaun Marsh a notable exception.

tbf half the wristies art is to get batsmen playing st00pid shots that end up down the throat of deep mid wicket

Can't help but feel CA being exceedingly generous here. Not as if the Aussies just warmed up against weak sides, the sides were rock-bottom before they then rested their best players. Unless it's guaranteed via contract, the ECB will be stupid if they don't dud the touring Aussies next Ashes.

If it goes down that way, got a horrible feeling we probably won't hear about it in those terms from CA too. It'll be spin like "It's more important to establish a winning culture than play the absolute best available." and other such blabla.

Ahmed's 5 is a worry for Lyon. What's Lyons record at Brisbane? Dougeh would be a much better bet than the scatter gun. Odds are probably long on him though.

Just saw that MJ was sent home from India. Ffs. 0-75 on day 1 here we come.

if lyon doesnt take more than 2 wickets in an innings in the first 2 tests, Ahmed will play the 3rd

I read the report from day 2 of the VIC vs WA game and the guy seemed to think Fawad earned most of his wickets, pretty decent effort on day 2 of an MCG shield match, he's no Michael Beer though

nah good call clarkey, dont want the nations talisman getting injured now
Called it a **** decision at the time, and the Tassies slapping it around for the last wicket just proves it was a dud decision. Probs cost us 50 runs. Dougeh was on fire. You don't take a guy having that sort of a spell off when you've got the opposition 9 down.

Henry has such a good set up; can't help but feel he's holding himself back more than he should though. Double hundred in grade a couple of weeks ago doesn't tend to suggest someone down on form or lacking in release shots.

Don't disagree he has the building blocks, but he does seem to be playing too much within himself and not getting the score moving as well as he should. Maybe just needs a ton to secure his spot and put his mind at ease.

Good to see he's getting on with it since tea. Tricky declaration coming up for Clarke. Will make it easier to time if we get the scoring rate up closer to 3.5.

I think I'd be much more comfortable with Henry opening and Maddinson batting in the middle order, especially when the other opener is Warner. Ideally Maddinson should be pushing for a Test middle order spot by the end of the summer and he's only ever really scored First Class runs when he looks to bat aggressively. Henry's definitely got the game to see off the new ball.
