The way that Jenner was elevated as this spin bowling God after becoming Warne's go to guy hasn't helped in the slightest. His word became gospel, and that hasn't been a good thing for Australian spin bowling. Every finger spinner has to work with him, and some of his stuff makes sense, but there's only one way to bowl in his mind, and if you can't do that then you won't make it.
did you ever get sent to him?

Fair point but surely there's other factors at lower levels than what Jenner coaches at. More pace-friendly pitches at Shield level of late? The rise of T20 utility all-rounders? Spinners only being used in all forms to bowl slow-med?

You're at the coal-face so you'd be in a better position to know but I'm curious as to why spinners in every state aren't even being selected and when they are, asked to just do a job rather than take wickets. How early in their development do spinners get Jennernerfed?

It reminds me very much of how spinners were treated pre-Warne, lots of dinky meds around the place to support the quicks was the order of the day. From what I recall, blokes like Jenner were appointed to address this exact problem which led to blokes like Warne getting earmarked for Tests and what people are calling for now. Politically, it was about getting spinners into state teams rather than specialist coaching and Jenner, whilst offering some, was mainly about advocacy. From memory, Jenner = technical God came much later.

Guess I'm just sceptical that with Jenner gone from the coaching game, that suddenly the spin slaves are free. They've still got to get a game and I think state selectors are getting a free pass if Jenner is being totally blamed for the state of spin bowling in this country. Reckon some state captains need a re-think about how they treat their spinners.
There were two pre-seasons in a row where every Victorian spinner that they were looking at had one or two private sessions with Jenner. The first time he was pretty good for me, working on getting more side-on and side spin on the ball. The second time was... not quite so good.

There's a clear development issue when you have guys with successful starts, and big wraps, on them going haywire so regularly. Mangan, Bailey, Cullen, Casson have gotten the yips in recent times, I think a large bit of that is because guys don't know their game; they are being constantly tinkered with in their action at 18-19-20 in a way which would never happen to quicks.

Did Mr Jenner ever touch your 'bowling action'?

Also is it at all possible to blame Bryce McGain's terrible performance in his solo test match on Jenner?

McGain was coming back from shoulder surgery, he just wasn't ready.

As I said earlier, he's done some stuff with me. Did some standing stuff, hands in a certain spot, that's where you should be when you bowl. In the end, it worked for me getting more side-on and getting some more side-spin on the ball, then the next year he worked on my run-up and I found that horrible, had my own little intricacies and natural rhythms, which he tried to stamp out. I spent two months trying to do what he wanted, and then gave up on it and went back to what I used to do, but it just didn't come naturally, and I had a nightmare of a season.

This is a hilarious finish.

WA need 1 off 1 now. Needed 1 off 3 and lost two wickets.

Great innings from North.

Fair for blokes of that age but you had problems for a season and are coming through it. Bailey/Cullen/Casson have essentially had the yips for years. How long can Jenner be blamed for that? At some point, from my perspective (less informed, obv), there has to be some personal responsibility for your future career in any field unless there's some info I'm missing?

Seriously, as an outsider I'm curious. You took responsibility for your bowling, why can't they? On Dan Cullen, I know he's been hitting the Favell-Dansie nets regularly for a long time by himself so one wonders what exactly his problem is.

Warner's looking really good.

If this was my first time watching these two bat and I was asked to guess which one averaged 50 odd in First Class cricket and which one had been a limited overs specialist up until this point...

NSW batting well this morning. It is a good sign that Phil Hughes is making some runs, it seems an era ago that he was scoring tons on a weekly basis.

Big chance for Casson. It is near 18 months since he last played a first class game for NSW.
