Hey guys,
Excuse me for my slackness after my promise that I would be posting updates from the oval during the Shield match but due to the redevelopment that is happening now on the Western grandstand, there was no internet access up in the match day office; or network cables which made it difficult to do some media duties... as well as cricket web updates! I think it'll be worth it though when the new stand is up; the images from the architects look really modern. (they are retaining the red brick arches for those of you who are for keeping the heritage; I am a fan of the heritage listed parts of the stand myself, and the way they'll build the modern around the old will look great; in my opinion.
)
I also didn't work Sat or Sun
so it wouldn't have been very interesting for you to recieve updates from me then!
Although sitting next to the player's box on Thursday and Friday was interesting as the mood amongst the player's and high performance staff in the box was one of high energy. I have only been to a few matches this season having only been at the SACA for a month now; but the mood in the box was more positive than I have seen.
Winning some great games at home against Queensland in both the Sheffield Shield and the Ford Ranger Cup seemed to give the boys a great desire to continue on that good form and claim another victory at home to give them their third consecutive win since 1994-95. And also to maintain this season's record of not losing outright at home. Even when they got into some trouble on Friday and lost some quick wickets, it didn't seem to dampen their spirits, only spur them on further.
It was also great to hear them being vocal on the field, yelling encouragement to each other the entire day's play when fielding on Thursday.
Mark Cleary seemed to be walking on air (although declined to sit down from fear of not being able to stand again) when a couple of journos and I grabbed some statements off of him on Thursday night; and why wouldn't he be after taking 5/78 that day (and going on to take 10 for the match!)
I would be interested to hear what you guys think of Mark Cosgrove... should SA strive to keep him on side? Is he good enough to play for Australia?
The only interesting news from my time at the match about Mark Cosgrove was him staring at me curiously when I was talking to Nugget (what a legend btw) as if to say; who's this new girl? And also, someone yelling with incredible clarity from the crowd: 'Fat C**t' when Cosgrove got out in the 1st innings.....
What an excellent way to finish the season for the Redbacks, positives all around and no bottom place finishes across all comps. The young guys coming up, Haberfield, Smith, George all seem to finding a place in first class cricket nicely and I (as well as Redbacks fans I'm sure) will be looking forward to what they can do next season.
What a great win on the weekend boys, well done!!
