Don't watch the interviews so can't catch the context, but the 'old school SCG turner' hasn't existed since the pitch was relaid in 2002-ish. Since then it's mostly been just flat, even favouring pace bowlers if there's a bit of live grass.

The scalped wickets in the eighties (e.g. against the West Indies) were exceptional and this pitch was never going to behave the same way with the mat of dead grass binding the surface. Even though there was turn the ball never came off the pitch fast enough to cause serious trouble.

The 3rd ump kept calling for a side on angle for the Smith catch. Which kind of suggests he wasn't convinced on anything he saw that was available. So I'm wondering what was the conclusive evidence he had to overturn the on field decision.

I think that people mainly remember the performances such as Holland cleaning up the Windies. In general the quality of visiting (and sometimes home) spinners hasn't been too good which causes issues analysing them, but the averages and aggregate were closest in the middle period I have defined which is the one associated with the 'spin friendly SCG'.

Most recently it has clearly been very batting friendly. Not surprising as the normal surface there recently looks like that associated with Burdett's Adelaide - dead grass rolled into the surface to produce a flat, easy-paced pitch that doesn't wear much except for the footmarks.

Sa fans more knowledgeable about the SA system, could SA field a second eleven of guys who weren't in the touring party that would beat the first eleven they played this series?

Batting wise yes. I would not be picking Hermann yet. J.Malan, Breetzke also good option. Bowling is a bit more difficult, the best bowlers are largely with the tour squad. Outside the touring squad you have Sipamla, Mnyaka (been a revelation this season), Viljoen, M. Pretorius, N. Burger, Dupavilion (if not injured)
