*Official* Australia vs South Africa -2022/3

On a semi-serious note, reckon that Australia will try to either enforce the follow-on or if they can't (and even on this wicket South Africa would be doing well to get to 300 on current form) will basically deliberately try to manufacture a result ala this Test.
I mean they'd just slog for a session if they had to

If uzzie get's a double tommorow then all of the Australian top 4 have made a 200 this summer. When was the last time that happened in a home summer?
The opposition horrific. These are the worst two teams in world cricket surely. Away from home. Wi have the worst pace attack away from home. Saf have the worst ever spinners away from home in Maharaj and hammer. They are useless - Maharaj nearly tripled ton without a wicket.

“visiting offie comes to australia and gets massacred” doesn’t move the needle really for me unless we’re testing their atg chops

mind u on careers you’d have to take lyon one hundred days out of ninety nine, but over the last three or four years if you asked me to pick a team of non subcont cricketers, unless it was for playing in australia i would take kesh
In the last three and a half years or so Lyon averages 29.42 and Maharaj averages 37.70

Can't really compare like for like as they haven't really both bowled a decent amount in the same country, but on the overall figures for all Test cricket played in the timeframe it isn't even close

Must say I am a touch surprised Maharaj has been that poor in average in the last few years, especially as his home record is very healthy

what if the south african captain were to propose that when australia are bowled out, his team is to declare their first inns and aus then declare on their second inns just after that… a thought…
Would be an insane thing to do when the opposition is 4/500 lol

They’ll do exactly the same to England over there. India will be tough, so we’ll probably only win 2-1 there, but England will get pole axed 4-0, rain the only saving grace for them in one game.

So with a lot of people questioning whether the rain should mean the SCG should lose the New Years Test, I went through the last 30 or so years and looked at how the SCG fared weather wise in the New Years Test:

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...th-africa-3rd-test-1317494/live-cricket-score - Likely to lose a lot of play, and might make it near impossible to get a result
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...ia-vs-england-4th-test-1263465/full-scorecard - Draw, lost 60 overs
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...alia-vs-india-3rd-test-1223871/full-scorecard - Draw, lost 21 overs
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...s-new-zealand-3rd-test-1183534/full-scorecard - hooray, no rain!
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...alia-vs-india-4th-test-1144996/full-scorecard - Draw, lost 168 overs
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...ia-vs-england-5th-test-1072309/full-scorecard - Lost the first session of play on Day 1
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...a-vs-pakistan-3rd-test-1000885/full-scorecard - Lost the first session of play on Days 3 + 4
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...vs-west-indies-3rd-test-892519/full-scorecard - Draw, lost 294 overs
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...ralia-vs-india-4th-test-754743/full-scorecard - No rain (but was still a draw)
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...lia-vs-england-5th-test-592401/full-scorecard - No rain

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...lia-vs-england-5th-test-428753/full-scorecard - First and last days appear to have had somewhat significant interruptions
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...ia-vs-pakistan-2nd-test-406200/full-scorecard - Lots of rain on Day 1
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...s-south-africa-3rd-test-351683/full-scorecard - No rain
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...ralia-vs-india-2nd-test-291352/full-scorecard - Day 4 significantly interrupted by rain
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...lia-vs-england-5th-test-249226/full-scorecard - Slight rain delay Day 2, possibly also rain Day 1
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...s-south-africa-3rd-test-226373/full-scorecard - Most of Day 4 washed out, possibly rain on Day 1
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...lia-vs-pakistan-3rd-test-64115/full-scorecard - Lost the first session of play on Day 3
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...tralia-vs-india-4th-test-64062/full-scorecard - No notable rain (but was still a draw)
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...alia-vs-england-5th-test-64013/full-scorecard - No rain
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...vs-south-africa-3rd-test-63966/full-scorecard - No rain
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...-vs-west-indies-5th-test-63911/full-scorecard - No rain
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...tralia-vs-india-3rd-test-63867/full-scorecard - Day 1 significantly interrupted by rain
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...alia-vs-england-5th-test-63818/full-scorecard - No rain
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...vs-south-africa-2nd-test-63779/full-scorecard - Parts of Day 4 lost to rain
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...alia-vs-england-3rd-test-63665/full-scorecard - Draw, lost 88 overs
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...vs-south-africa-2nd-test-63629/full-scorecard - Hard to tell - but seems parts of Day 2 were rain-affected?
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...-vs-west-indies-3rd-test-63592/full-scorecard - Draw, lost 42 overs (no idea if that was because of rain or over-rates and the flatness of the pitch not allowing for a result, though)
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...tralia-vs-india-3rd-test-63565/full-scorecard - Draw, apparently lost 94.1 overs on Days 3 and 4 due to rain
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...alia-vs-england-3rd-test-63545/full-scorecard - No notable rain (but was still a draw)

Seems to be very patternable, but the problem has gotten much worse in recent years. Before about 2015 you did get a number of rain interruptions but generally not significantly worse than anywhere else that didn't have an obvious seasonal rain pattern and usually you could still get a result. Since then, you've had two de facto washouts, one Test where rain made it difficult to get a result and 2-3 other Tests where a number of overs were lost because of rain.

I'll try compare it to others at a later point, but certainly in the last decade it's tough to think of many other places that have a worse rain record.

Maybe I'm being too Oz-centric in my approach, but really I think Lyon is in a different class. Maharaj just doesn't seem to be all that dangerous most of the time. I'm surprised he's bowled so many pies here as he usually seems fairly reliable but he just doesn't have that many weapons. Lyon's style can mean that his impact can be wanting in conditions that should suit him, but he is the better bowler.

One of the most used and favoured quotes on our game......"There are 2 sides out there but only 1 is playing Cricket"(Bodyline series 32/33) I feel the previous Test and this one also fits the bill. The Aussies have turned up to play TEST Cricket and The South Africans have turned up to get their "Appearance Fees". Test Cricket is the loser as the saffies have as much potential as the aussies. The difference being they are not motivated, trained or as skilfull as their opponents. It's been a long time since such a woeful display of the game has graced out hallowed grounds.

Aus will be lucky to win a test. Jofra Archer, Jimmy Anderson, Ollie Robinson and Chris woakes unplayable in english conditions. Aus attack not as potent in english conditions, duke ball.

“I give myself just a pass. 6 out of 10” says man who retired as test cricket’s leading run scorer and most capped player. Tough room.
Probably knows deep down his average is boosted by hiding down the order and he didn't get as many tons as he should've in that many matches

fair play, for the very first time on this forum and certainly not the last it appears i’ve been proven wrong

really felt that of late lyon’s been pretty ordinary, if you’d given me those two numbers i’d without hesitation guessed they were flipped on my vibe based approach to analysing cricket

27 tons in 156 tons isn't a lot. It's a Chanderpaul-like return. So is his runs per average stat.
Border carried Australian cricket for 5 years when we were at our absolute worst

We were playing the Windies constantly during that period & he led Australia to #1 on his back

Think Steve Waugh and add many levels

Wouldn't this be the same for everyone
Nah Chanderpaul and Waugh havea disproportionate gap between their averages and RPI because of shameless selfish batting and exposing the tail. Border fits in that grouping too but evades criticism. ?
