Can we talk about how bad Elgar is away? Doesn't average over 32 anywhere away (excluding minnows). At least Warner cashes in on featherbeds occasionally. Elgar doesn't have *one* series of note away. His away record is worse than random journeymen like Murali Vijay and Taufeeq Umar. He's made it this far purely based on looking #gritty. Absolute bottom tier HTB.
It's so strange because the way he talks to the media and behaves on field, you'd think he averaged 45+ a la Graeme Smith and had a litany of storied backs-to-the-wall away series performances to back it up. But no, he talks a ton of **** and then does ****-all overseas.

I love an Elgar gritty knock and for a period before 2020 he was playing an occasional important great knock. But since then he has not been contributing when he is most needed. Also been part of the leadership that continues the terrible selections and nonsense. I can’t see the value he will bring for another 2 years at his age, when SA desperately need a total batting overall.

Someone on cricketweb years from now will give him extra points for being from SA where batting is harder
Is Hussey the most inane commentator going around? Seems incapable of talking in anything but cliches.
Never heard him say anything negative about a player before either

There was a moment yesterday when I think Green was on strike early and Gilchrist was trying to make a technical point about how he was playing those short of a length balls and getting cramped, and Hussey just barged in midway and went "well actually he needs to show Intent (tm)"

What's weirder is that South African decks are usually pretty spicy where he does well. Like his home average is way better than Graeme Smith's, for example.

Has green stopped playing that back foot punch/cover drive that he started playing just before we toured Asia this year? He looked far more comfortable vs the short ball when he was able to lean back and use that shot to score at the end of the last ashes.

Don't think you can judge too much on this innings tbf since he seemed not to be using his bottom hand at all and thus could only rarely get it off the square. But even that shot isn't really a back foot shot, he plays that from a neutral position.

this south african batting is as pathetic as the indian lineup (especially away from home), isn't it? was fairly certain australia would win but thought this series would be a little more competitive...
Ours is poor and yet significantly better than SA's

i get they have better records than this team but it's just i can easily see them folding exactly like this...

I think a lot of that is opposition bowlers bowling to short early in the innings because they are less used to the SA wickets.
oppo bowlers do this a lot in australia too, feels like they've come with an idea that Because Australia Has Fast Pitches, even if you're a 130k dibbler, you've got to bowl short of a length to take advantage - but what our bowlers get is that you largely pitch it up and the pitch itself works in your favour

what's weird is, even broad and anderson do this and they've toured here a million times - every ashes that rolls around (except the most recent when jimmy was bowling okay) we inevitably get the beehive of stuart broad bowling like 2.7% of balls that were going on to shiver timbers
