LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has deprived its own cricketers from much-needed practice for the challenging Test series against world champions Australia, to be played at neutral venue in England from July 13.
In a bizarre plan, the PCB has finalised the travelling schedule of five key Pakistan players in such a manner that they will not be getting any practice whatsoever in the England conditions prior to the tough Test series against Ricky Ponting’s men later this month. The five — Yasir Hameed, Azhar Ali, Zulqernain Haider, Mohammad Asif, and Tanvir Ahmad — will literally be thrown at the deep end since they are scheduled to arrive in England on July 10, just three days before the start of the first Test against Australia at Lord’s.
Two other players, Imran Farhat and Danish Kaneria, who have also been named in the Test side are already in England and will join the team from there.
Pakistan’s last two-day side match prior to the Aussie Tests is scheduled against Leicestershire from July 8 and the five players will not be able to participate in that game for the much-needed practice which is a clear case of bad planning from the PCB.
When contacted, a PCB spokesman confirmed that the Board had initially made the plans to send the Test team players on July 10 but they could leave earlier to get some practice in the England conditions.
Pakistan will take on Essex in a T20 match on July 2 and the very next day face Northamptonshire before meeting Australia in two Twenty20 matches on July 5 and 6.
The first Test between Pakistan and Australia will be played at Lord’s from July 13 while second Test will commence on July 21 at Headingley, Leeds.
Soon afterwards, Pakistan will be facing England in a four-Test series starting from July 29. England is hosting the ‘home series’ for Pakistan after Australia refused to visit Pakistan on security grounds.
