Doesn't matter to the rankings. SA didn't get any less points from beating Aus 5-0 because they were playing a club-level bowling attack.

Still well played though. Even if Australia's whole team first XI players were rested it ]would still take some doing for NZ to beat an A-team. It's not like they don't deserve any credit.
How do you figure that when they won 2-0 when Aust were only really missing Warner and Smith of any real note to NZ's Guptill?

Outside of that both sides had 2-3 other players unavailable that one could argue would make their respective top XIs, Australia Marsh, Wade & Bailey & NZ; Anderson, Milne & McClenaghan.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the bowling attack of Starc, Hazel, Cummins, Stonis & Zampa, is pretty close to your best ODI attack isn't it?

Yes, that was my main point.

The other point was to rile up the NZ fans of course, they had to be put back in their place after the success they've been seeing since Pakistan arrived and stunk up the joint.

MMarsh is a walk up to Australia's ODI side. Absence of Bailey keenly felt, but the fault of no one but the Aussie set up.

Who does MMarsh replace? Head, Stoinis, Maxwell or Faulkner? And is there much in it either way?

Also. not sure Bailey gets in once Warner & Smith are back does he?

A bowling Anderson mitigates most problems. Middle order runs, fifth bowler and death bowling.
Had forgotten about him, although when was the last time he bowled at any level? Not this summer, right? He's probably a long way from returning to the crease, and certainly with any level of performance in internationals.

I still don't understand why Neesham was below Munro. Neesham scores runs v Australia at 4 then some more v Bangladesh, but bats below Munro who's clearly struggling.

I'd be picking Ish for all three (presume three) ODIs v SA, straight swap for Manu. I love Manu but he's so clearly down on confidence.

Marsh would probably bat six. They won't pick Bailey, I'm just saying imo he should be there, more so with Warner and Smith not playing. Ridiculous omission.

This is something the proposed ODI league could fix. You're much more likely to play your best side and not rest half your players if the games actually count to something.

future CWers are going to wonder why we were all moaning during a summer where, to date, nz have won every home game and the only losses were away from home in odis without taylor, milne and some others (can't remember who played except that we spammed allrounders).

i think colin de grandhomme has won more tests against pakistan in his 4 test career than chris martin did in his 70 tests (despite playing at least two full series against them).

we were so spoiled when we had a couple of years of being almost impossible to beat, and often turning impossible situations into wins or at least hilarious morale destroying draws. so um, i guess it's nice that southee and to an extent boult can spend the summer trying the legside and long hop tactics and the batting leaves everything to one bloke every innings and nz still win a lot of games?

Marsh can have a stint on the sidelines I think. He had an extended run so give these new guys one

Two concerns - our run production from 6 down (although I like Neesham there) and our 5th bowler. Sort those and we're looking really good.

Would like it if this were true, however don't think Anderson's quite as good as that. His ODI bowling has been pretty good for a part-timer, especially as he's bowled at the death and done no worse than anyone else not named Boult. It's his batting that's not been good enough - certainly hasn't been up to number 5, strike rotation is not his strength and good opposition bowlers have found it easy to shut him down until he holes out.

Wonder if he could fit in even as low as number 7 and hit from the get-go. Probably not, though it's the sort of role that would make him valuable in the side.

He was injured, no?

Edit: wait you mean Bailey. Carry on

I genuinely think he's down on quality at the highest level. He looks poke against anything resembling decent bowling.

I was wrong re Brownlie. Definitely the right pick over one of the younger guys. Looked comfortable and knows how game. Good for him.

I'm willing to admit my bias affects me on Munro.

And I wanted Worker instead of Brownlie, doesn't necessarily make me wrong that Dean scored runs but good on him for taking his opportunity,

I'd love Munro to turn it on against the big guns but I'm just doubting he ever will now. Will be happy to be proved wrong there, mind. He's brutal when he gets going.

Yeah, I really wanted to them go for Young or Bruce or, indeed, Worker, though I'm obviously happy that Brownlie worked out well. He was a conservative pick, there is no doubting that.

You mean Mitch or Shaun? IIRC Mitch has been one of our best ODI batsmen over the last year and a half. Probably only behind Smith and Warner. That's not even taking his bowling into account.

Bailey appears to be on the outer because of his age, but he also had a bad mini-run, but nothing more. And it was Chris Lynn replaced him because of his blazing form in the BBL.
I'm with you too on M. Marsh, but with the rotations that we tend to make, he'll get a game or two in series.
Head and Stoinis are in my best xi atm, but then again, I said my peace in the second sentence.
Nice, nobody is countering or arguing my obviously correct points here too.
