Would be great.

Still don't really get what the team's going to be if that happens though. Perhaps:

Watson
Marsh
Ponting
Clarke
Symonds
MHussey
Haddin
Hopes
Lee
Johnson
Bracken

That leaves Clark, White, DHussey and Ronchi on the bench.

The team looks a bowler short to me. I'm not sure what they were planning when it was meant to be Hayden there instead of Watson.

I could be misunderstanding you hear sir, but it seems as if you are suggesting if Watson does secure a spot in the Aussie side that way it would be a bad thing?
Nah, I'm a fan.

Just saying that it would be ironic, given he was slated to be in the Ashes side last year and missed out, along with so many other times where others have come in after he's been injured and made hay (and good on them for doing so too).

It was a joke you god damned idiot. It's exam time here in Australia.
8-)
Wow. It really was hard to figure out that it's exam time there huh? And maybe that's why he used that joke? And maybe because it was a university team he had even more reason to say something like that? A university student would be concentrating more on his upcoming exams than a cricket match. I like didn't get that at all. Nope.

Like the Twenty20s, would have Clark before Hopes and David Hussey in for Symonds who should rest for a bit longer. Have Watto bowl around six overs and give Clarke and Hussey one or two each.

Ie:

Watto (c)
Marsh
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey I
Hussey II
Haddin
Johnson
Lee
Clark
Bracken

I kind of agree with you about Clark... but I was thinking of it from the selectors point of view that Hopes was fairly settled in that side in the last ODI match.

Have to say I'm not sure Ponting and Clarke would be too amused being ordered round by Watto, brilliant viewing though it would be.

Naa like pasag's lineup. Hopes is like a jigsaw, too many bits and pieces for me. Would prefer a dependable bowler like Clark.

AWTA

its either Hopes or Watto.. not both.. imo
those two are good bowlers, but i wouldn't risk them having to bowl 20 overs between them

should play Fraz

Am not disagreeing with that... I think four bowlers plus Watto/Hopes is best. I'm just wondering what the selectors are going to do.

Anyway... looks like Watto, confirmed by Ponting.

yea im a big fan of Hopes but i understand that Watson is more of a matchwinner than Hopes - particularly with the bat... with the ball, i trust Hopes a lot more than Watson.. and i dont necessarily think Watson is better at 'taking wickets' than Hopes... but Watson as a batsman is exceptional

so im happy if Watson opens with Marsh
David Huss for Roy
and have 4 bowlers :)

Although they were in 2020 Watson's recent performances with the ball far outshone Hopes, who was strangely very poor. Watto's bowling surprised every1 i reckon, great consistency taking wickets and economical to boot. Has to be in front of Hopes for a spot surely

I believe that it would be a mistake to include Bracken in the team for Australia's first ODI. I believe that he should not be catapulted so soon after a potentially career ending knee injury back into international cricket without time to reacustom himself to the level of international cricket with some more time in the nets with the international team. It is because Bracken is such a magnificent ODI bowler that I think Australia should bend over backwards to ensure a smooth transition from his injury back to the international schedule rather than one marred with niggles.

From this squad:

Chris Gayle (Captain), Ramnaresh Sarwan (Vice Captain), Sulieman Benn, Dwayne Bravo, Patrick Browne, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Fidel Edwards, Andre Fletcher, Xavier Marshall, Keiron Pollard, Daren Powell, Denesh Ramdin, Darren Sammy, Jerome Taylor.

...I'd hope for:

CH Gayle (c)
XM Marshall
RR Sarwan (vc)
S Chanderpaul
DJ Bravo
KA Pollard
D Ramdin (wk)
SJ Benn
JE Taylor
DB Powell
FH Edwards

I'd prefer not to see Kieron Pollard in at this stage, but he's a lot better prepared than Andre Fletcher, for mine. I don't mind Powell's bowling in ODI cricket, generally, once he doesn't bowl at the death. Sammy hasn't been very sharp recently.

Just heard that Ramdin (neck) and Chanders (calf) are injury concerns, along with the established injuries to Gayle and Sarwan. Lee expected to rest too, it seems.

Ah well, as long as everyone had the chance to impress the IPL bosses ahead of the next season, they'll be happy 8-)

Anyways, a bit of a scary quote from Ponting:

"White's obviously been picked as the spinner on this tour, and he just happens to be a pretty handy batsman to go with it. We just need to keep exposing him to different situations and putting him under a bit more pressure. I think he's going to learn a lot from being under pressure more often … and hopefully he plays a big role for us during the series.

Well, this series will be the acid test, I would reckon. Doubt they'll be looking at him for a Test spot so if he bowls well in this series, reckon he'll be considered as Hogg's replacement.

Amazing how under-rated Hogg is, though eh? Only realise what a hole he left when he retired.
