Yeah it seemed to me he was playing a shot at that despite what the comms said, it was just a pretty sh!t one.

I think it was just a moment of commentator bias.

In fairness a lot of the time you see the bat tucked behind the pad like the batsman is obviously not intending to play a shot but rather is doing just enough to convince the umpire (Tendulkar was a master of this), but it's been precedent for so long that it's just enough it's not worth arguing over.
