**Official** Australia in Sri Lanka Jan - Feb 2025

Fair to say, based off this performance, SL is a top 5 ODI side, and top 3 in these conditions(with IND and PAK)

This SL ODI team is 100% world class.

Fair to say, based off this performance, in spinning conditions, Aus is right near the bottom in terms of ranking(with the likes of ENG which lost every game to India recently). Some bad selections have not helped Aus case, but even the veterans could not play the spin.

Out of the non Asia teams, NZ is probably the best in these conditions(they beat Ind 3-0 recently in tests), WI are also no slouch with some good spinners.

Aus probably regretting not getting a few games into guys who have some record of performing in subcontinental ODIs, like Turner, Handscomb in the last few years. Slightly worrying performance by our Big Bash "stars".

Who are the BBL stars?

Asalanka winning the Player of the Series, I don't understand why he doesn't player more test cricket, a classy batsman and Sri Lanka don't have many.
He got a chance and failed miserably. He averages 15 away in odis. He averages 29 at fc. Everyone in the test squad atm is settled. They just all simultaneously folded during that test series. The only player we can drop atm for him is Angelo Matthews. And there are far better candidates ahead of Asalanka who are averaging 50+ at fc

You say we dont have many classy batters but then seem to forget we smacked like 600 against you guys a couple series ago. Short memories.

He's only played 3 tests and that was a few years ago, not much of a chance, he might be a better test batsman now at 27, he has a good technique.

He hasn't been up against the best Australian bowlers in this ODI series but he has handled them all pretty comfortably and dominated with the bat.

I don't see why he can't do the same in test cricket if he was given another chance, he looks a class above most other Sri Lankan batsmen I've seen.

let's not let sticking the boot into aus overshadow how comprehensive the performance from sl's bowling attack was in both games... relentless!

Congratulations to SL

I watched the game with a friend of mine and we’re scratching our heads

Australia currently has the following sitting at home

Uzi - test cricketer and contract holder
Lyon - see above
Boland - see above
Murphy - see above
Konstas - test cricketer
Neser - test cricketer
Morris - contract holder
Bartlett - contract holder
Owen - BBL player of the year
Etc

I could pick a better squad in 5 minutes than the one we have chosen so what’s the end game?

But how many of those are realistic ODI players? The top 3 clearly not, the next 5 are really not that much different to what's in this squad and Owen couldn't buy a run when he went to SA. So is that really that much better to what's in SL?

Of particular concern appears to be the lack of batting options if the alternative to JFM is an old guy, a 19 year old or what appears to be a one season wonder.

Don't think they should get too carried away with these results. Sri Lanka did beat India 2 zip at home so there is a good team for these conditions and Australia are almost certainly playing low intensity cricket after the tests

That being said, McGurk's continues selection is pretty dire as he is clearly not up for it and Short is pretty bad too.

Head
Inglis
Smith
Marnus
Carey
Maxwell
Hardie
Abott
Ellis
Johnson
Zampa

Is alright. Starc pulling out for no apparent serious reason probably hurt more than most

Konstas has scored about 25 hundreds in the last 3 years including 1 yesterday

Bartlett & Morris will probably play test cricket this year and have CA contracts so they’re literally paying them $500k to sit at home

Just to put things into perspective, Ellis (whom I am not against) is maybe the 3rd best quick in Tasmania

It’s a joke team

While I am on a rant, anyone who thinks that Lyon couldn’t have become a useful white ball bowler is an idiot

The guy has taken 550 test wickets ffs

I hate finger spinners but anyone with that amount of talent should have played more than 29 ODIs

But yeah, let’s go with random bowlers who couldn’t get me out
