He’s only ever scored three 100s away, all in one year and one series (2014) against South Africa. That is a poor, poor record for an opener.

I wouldn’t say he’s been anywhere close to impressive in England - 8 matches with only a highest score of 85 as an opener – not even remotely good enough.
tbf he made a ton in the UAE against Pakistan too that year. and he probably needs to be judged based on last year's Ashes, he batted out of position in a dysfunctional team in 2013.

Will be a massive, massive test for Smith to pass here. Run rate falling, no boundary in 40 balls on a really difficult track. Match winning knock here would cement him as the world's best for me.

Against the world's 7th best team.

That really is concerning then. That one just looked so out, although perhaps the spin was negated by it hitting his pad quite soon due to a big stride forward.
The reason why umpires used to give it not out on the big stride forward is for this reason, it can look very deceptive, especially from front on where you just can't see how much further the ball has got to travel.

I really don't think the ball tracking is implausible when you consider he'd come down the wicket to meet it.

maybe on current form - but none from the younger crop has done enough to surpass AB, Amla, Younis yet

Yeah super batting. Sounds like light may take them off soon but this was a vital partnership at a pressure time. Game on a complete knife edge.

Exactly this. Ball tracking is maybe a bit error-prone but it's not exactly cutting-edge either. Most of the time, gets it right.

That is almost total bollocks. Unless you're taking current form to mean "the last three years". Younis looks so bad at the moment, despite clearly being a great player in the past I am not sure anyone can have confidence he can regain it. AB had a rough 12 months in Tests. Amla probably a fair one to put near Root/Smith and on par with Williamson.

Even Amla hasn't exactly had his best year. Made runs vs England but really sucked in India.
