You should have seen the footage of their team leaving for the Rugby World Cup, you could have been under the impresssion they had just won the thing with all the autographs and celebrating going on.

iirc in a rugby match over there a while back, they were giving us a hiding and over the PA the announcer called out 'Let's send these sheep shaggers back to Australia.' Pretty crazy stuff from an employee. Seeing old footage of Australia playing India with signs such as 'Go home Currymunchers' doesn't inspire one either.

I remember the build up to the 01/02 series here in Oz, i wish i could find the articles still, it was just abysmal stuff, from Wessels, Procter, Richards, they were saying how SA had 4 guys as fast as Jeff Thomson etc.....come the first test and Ntini gets hammered out of the series on day 1, Hayward is a joke, Donald is medium pace at best, and Claude Henderson.....we he makes Michael Beer look like the lovechild of Warne and Murali. So fail. After winning 5 tests we showed em. Oh yeah Wessels said we didn't have an opening partnership and our middle order was frail- well our openers sure failed eh Kepler, two double century stands? How many tons did Hayden score that summer vs SA again? 4? SA FAIL.

I can remember the Adelaide match. Langer hit a ton in the first dig and then Hayden got one in the second and we smashed them to all parts. Langer/Hayden Probably at the peak of their romance at that stage.

No doubt that Australia has much the better of SA since isolation. The latter has been competitive though. Even with Australia's superior resources it wouldn't have been easy to be out of big cricket for twenty years and then had to play at least of couple of indigenous players for e.g..for the sake of demographic balance.

Hayden was so good. Its funny, i remember when he first went on the Ashes tour in 93, for some reason i just loved seeing his name opening the bating, it looked like a good name to see on the scorecard, ya know? Sounds odd i guess, but his name just inspired confidence in me. Just felt right to be there, along with Mark Taylor, was gutted when he couldn't establish himself, totally different era when he cemented himself in 2001.

Agree, but they became compacent for the home tests and rested while the Aussies worked hard. Don't think losing six out of six tosses helped them though as the toss was a clear factor in Sydney and Durban.

Hayden was a gun in full cry but had he played in an era when the Windies bowling was in full flight his average would have been dented. He always looked extremely vulnerable against the moving ball right until his last series when Steyn embarrassed him into retirement.

As mentioned in that other thread, Hayden in bad form against top class pace bowling was like watching a car crash. fortunately for Hayden he wasn't in bad form often...or faced with top class pace bowling. Have a feeling rob could up dozens of videos with him demolishing top class spin though

Nah, Hayden was fine with the moving ball by the end of his career. When Praveen was down here he had it swinging ridiculously and Hayden played him really well.

It's just the selectors were no longer giving him the time for him to play himself back into form and the pressure caused him to play some really rash innings. His last 3 series were pretty abysmal.

But Hayden was too good not to succeed, even in the 90s IMO. In full flight he not only made a mountain of runs he mentally raped the opposition bowlers too.

Hayden smacking the #1 bowler in the world for 18 runs in one over was just amazing to watch. And the Kallis coming out and crabbing along at less than a run a ball when his team needed him to swing. Total momentum shift.

Do you mean Pollock? He was bowling pop gun stuff in Australia a year earlier.
