Disagree on Marnus. He was struggling to pick up the lines and lengths especially today off Ashwin. Ashwin could have easily got him 2 or 3 times, including an easy bat pad that was dropped by Iyer.Marnus has looked rock solid and been our leading scorer so far this series (not a massive bar tbf) and a majority of his dismissals have been from balls that I don't think he could have done much about,
Smith's issue is that he's not following the methodology that made him so good last time we toured here. Smith of 2017 wouldn't have been caught dead getting beaten on the inside edge playing for spin vs jadeja 2 innings in a row like he did in the 1st test.
He was going backward to one's he should be going forward to. And then despite Ashwin giving plenty of signals as to the pitch staying low at a particular length, he chose to hang back. He was completely worked over by Ashwin in that 18th over. Jadeja just came in the next over, and bowled a 100 kph one (as compared to Ashwin s mid to high 80s) which just as Ashwin didn't rise up from a similar length. Labu was still lying back, stupidly and couldn't adjust to the pace of the ball.
I found Smith to be relatively better as he was atleast wearing some of the deliveries on the bat than lunging forward but still was getting flummoxed by Ashwins lengths. And then he played the most atrocious sweep , nowhere near pitch or line of the ball and got out. But then again, the previous deliveries sort of pushed Smith into playing that to break shackles.
It is basically two all time great spinners going about their work in tandem like Naatu naatu (RRR). And they have come a long way from 2017 in terms of skillets and application of talent. For me that's the biggest difference. Ashwin has had the mental upper hand over Smith since Adelaide 2020 whereas Jadeja has had his number in the last match by getting through him twice. Smith is a bloody good batsman and I hope he counterpunches one in the next 4 innings. He ought to atleast for cricket sake.
