Situational Irony - The irony that most people think of. A difference between what you expect to happen (in a story, for example) and what actually happens.

How does this not apply to everyone complaining that the best bowlers on paper wern't able to bowl enough and it was a waste of time bowling a part time spinner, then the part time spinner then going on to cause more problems than the frontline pacemen?
There was no choice - they would have spent the last half an hour in the pavilion if they'd bowled anyone other than the twirlies. Today's decision is one that was forced, and despite the fact that it didn't earn a wicket, it just might persuade Vaughan that he MIGHT be a threat tomorrow.

Now that could be ironic.

I Must say that this series has made me revise my opinion on bret Lee. Coming into this series i disliked him as a person and didnt rate him as a bowler. In this series he has shown himself too be a good bowler and a great competetor but also a very good sportsman

I've loved the guy to bits for years - his good humour in the face of barracking crowds when he wanders off to fine leg won me over years ago.

A day of mixed emotions for me at OT, firstly i was willing Warne on to get his hundred put he got out, but when Australia got to 302 i was begging to feel that my prediction of the tail getting Australia up to 300 then bowling England out for between 125-150 was going to come true :D , but it didn't, Strauss batted very well even though he was missed early.

Dizzy of Dizzy he showed so much grit with the bat i was hoping againts hope that he could have produced something with the ball but he didn't i dont want to say it but he has to be dropped for Nottingham, Kasper bowled well at Edgbagston so he will the more likely replacement but i for one would like to see Tait play.

It was the last time i saw the two greats bowl in a test match Pigeon & Warne  but i am glad i got to see them, OT has been jam packed for every day except yesteday & believe me i have been to many international matches & County matches here & i have never seen an OT crowd get behind a side like this, the only atmosphere that comes close to this that i can remember was the WC match between India & Pakistan.

So Australia need 398 more to win i dont think they will get them they are more likely to draw the game, but if they play for a draw they can easily loose they need to play positively, the pitch hasn't showed any signs of deteriorating when England batted this afternoon so thas a good sign the top order showd take a leaf out of Warne batting heroics & put their dalm heads & bat tomoro

Good news for Australian fans Clarke seems to be recovering he was at the ground all day today & in the latter part of the afternoon he had a bat in the indoor nets :D

Jones gets six. Dizzy gone.
hes finally got the figures that hes deserved for a while now. i still dont understand what possessed vaughan to not bowl simon jones on that final day at edgbaston particularly against lee, who looks quite fallible against the outswinger.

Scaly Pscine,

I am not saying that England doesn't have a (moderate) upper-hand here. But to say that England 'should' win is an overstatement. I think even you will agree that it isn't too difficult to spring back to form on this pitch (as Bell and Strauss) have shown. And people like Ponting and Martyn haven't even been in particularly bad form of late - merely looking for a lucky brake. And if they, alongside Gilly, get going that 400 in eminently getable.
The thing is the reason Gilly and most of the others haven't 'got going' is because the bowling has been too good for them - they're facing a bowling attack as a whole that's better than anything they've ever faced before. The only way they'll get anywhere near 400 tomorrow is if England bowl worse than at any time in this series for most of the day combined with Australia batting very well.

Does anyone else think hussey should replace katich ??
The english struggled against him and his record and experience in england is superb.

no, i dont see any reason why katich should be dropped. i doubt clarke will be fit to play the next test, unless he takes he gets injected with what mcgrath took after the last test, and unless hayden does something remarkable in this inning, theres more than enough reason to end his test career.

Warne took a lump out of the pitch (the main part, not footmarks) on a few occasions, apart from bowling quite a few balls that pitched way outside off stump and went down the leg-side to Strauss.

since i wasn't replying to your post in the first place, merely making a passing comment that Jones should imo be dropped, i don't see the problem
unfortunately jones has probably made his place in the test side secure for a while at least, after playing another one of his carefree knocks in a situation that demanded him to do so.

On that note, Chris Read made 73* for Notts today

This total worries me, i think england should have set them 450 and made it more secure or at least batted until jones got out or harmy had a thrash...could have made that total reasonably quickly whilst if Australia keep the runs ticking over tommorow and have wickets in hand at tea they could easily step up to 5 an over or so and take this from under our noses...

England got 409 all out in a day and if Australia bat sensibly on a pitch which isnt comparable to most 5th day pitches i think they could win it. Then again a few wickets in the morning session and i think the best they can get is a draw. All about tommorow morning i think. (state the obvious :))

as bad as it sounds, even shane watson would have been a better choice than gillespie.
But Watson wasn't in the squad on Thursday.

That's the point - playing a second spinner meant one of the batsmen had to miss out, making the line-up look weaker (especially had it been Katich left out, then Clarke gets injured!)
