Maybe it's cause I never saw him play, but I never understood the huge legend status that surrounded Viv. Sure, he was an attacking batsman who could play well, but stats-wise he just seems like a good batsman, but not much more.
What Eddie said. Viv was one of those players who transcends what his stats say and he still averaged 50. Post 30-years of age, he averaged far less than pre-30 but gee he was a special player.

The whole nonsense about 'same number of games as Viv' was a throwaway remark about 5 minutes after it was reported that only 3 Englishmen had done it faster. That's good enough for me. For all Trescothick's faults, he's still a HUGE plus in the England side.
Maybe. He's certainly a very good batsman when he gets things his way, but if I were an England fan I'd be worried about his ability to contribute against quality opposition when needed most. He's played a couple of good innings this series, but needed a let-off each time, and he's shown that his problems outside off-stump aren't just a before-he-gets-set thing either. Still, he's not as bad as some people make out, and he has played some genuinely great innings, like that incredible knock in South Africa.

I can see your Trescothick and raise you any Australian in the top 7.

It's not been a great series for batters, but (so far) it's been the most wonderful series period.

So far my team...

Langer
Trescothick
Flintoff
Pietersen
Gilchrist
Warne
Lee
Jones
McGrath

Spots for two batsmen there. Screw Vaughan.

I wasn't comparing Trescothick to Richards, hope people weren't thinking that.

Just saying that Trescothick doesn't get as much credit as he probably should for being pretty nifty.

Warne on for Lee pretty soon I imagine, unless he prefers the other end. Looked like taking a wicket a few times, but Australia have no runs to play with unfortunately.

Australia aren't looking that threatening with the current tactics.

Where's Warney?

Exactly what I'm thinking Pointing letting things drift again England scoring too quickly.
