From the scorecard it definitely looks like Woakes deserved the motm.

Not only did he break the partnership that was winning Australia the game, he took the wicket of both set batsmen.

Those 20-odd runs were pretty crucial too.

I don't really care much about these awards, but I think I'd have given it to him, just because he got the main men out, yeah Archer was the one who probably looked more dangerous, but Woakes as ever just did the job in a none flashy way, said it before but he always seems to be doomed to be over-looked by more striking individuals.

He's genuinely good value for them in the lower middle order. I didn't watch it much longer than when Buttler went, but in a low scoring game, Woakes' efforts looked to be the difference tbh

Think motm was given to archer because both of his spells were equally as threatening. Woakes didn't look like taking a wicket during the first 10 while archer was all over aus and based on the highlights it looked like both were as threatening in that middle section.

Yeah scraping in against a side that hasn't played for 6+ months while playing at home on the back of a full season's prep is the sign of an outfit screaming along on eight cylinders.

Qwality analysis brain.
Not sure too much can be attributed to home advantage in a ‘bio bubble’.

Playing tons more cricket recently and playing on familiar home pitches isn't home advantage?

In any case, England is a better ODI team full stop, but this was a pretty bad throw regardless.

Morgan specifically requested wickets they aren't used to that would prepare them for the next WC in India.

There was no way England had any sort of noteworthy home advantage yesterday. It would just be stuff like maybe the familiarity with ground dimensions, not being in a foreign country and being used to the general gloominess that lingers over the UK.

Tons more? Have the England white ball cricketers even played that much? I actually don’t know.

And personally don’t see pitches as being much of an issue in one day cricket.

No I’m not. Woakes was taking wickets at the other end triggering the collapse with Archer and got both key wickets. I watched the entire game kid. Woakes’s 3 quick wickets plus Archer’s wicket at the other end changed the game. Australia were 144-2 and Woakes took 3rd, 5th and 6th wickets.
This just comes down to Archer fanboying when Woakes deserved it weighing up the facts. Both got three important wickets but Woakes got two super key ones, better figures and 26 runs. No brainer for me that Woakes is motm
Important runs too

They had T20s against Ireland and Pakistan before this. Also a reasonable few domestic fixtures compared to their counterparts who only had intra squad matches.

No home advantage in the pitch though for sure.

Certainly that was a different pitch than that which England scored 480 on two years ago.

Beggars belief people can't admit England has the advantage in game time and home ground. I mean its just a fill in series, England. No need to take it so seriously.

There's always home advantage when one side is playing, er, at home, however minimal.

It's not the same advantage as playing at (say) the MGC on Boxing Day in front of 80,000 Vics in various states of embuggeredment, but even familiarity with the playing surface must be some kind of help.

I mean, Pakistan have played "home" tests (mostly) in the UAE for the last decade, but I'm willing to bet they've performed better there than the oppo has generally.

That said I think the toss was a bigger factor yesterday. I wasn't thinking that as I was sitting in my brother-in-law's garden checking cricinfo on my mobile and English wickets were falling with alarming regularity, but CurranT and Rashid showed there were runs to be made for the bold, but under lights with the darkening white ball dear old Chris Woakes was transformed briefly into a reasonable facsimile of Waqar.

That Rashid-Curran partnership was brilliant. Australia definitely lost the plot a bit while bowling to those two. Ended up costing them dear.

Indeed, not sure which countries fans are taking it overtly seriously though.

Anyway daemon makes the apposite point, Morgan has asked for slow and low pitches, which don't suit us at all, not sure we've mastered them at all though, only have one way to play, and if it doesn't work we seem ****ed, need to try to work the singles more when the boundaries aren't coming, which'll stop the pressure building hopeully, but just not got the faith that these players can do that
