One superb innings doesn't mean Australia won't continue to dominate.
The same thing was said after the Ashes but since then Australia has not lost a test.
So what, India has barely lost ODIs lately, that doesn't mean its the beginning of India's one-day dominance over the world. Australia's undisputed #1 status is dwindling for sure ... they are still the undisputed #1 team, but they are no longer invincible.

I suppose they could retain the number one position but thats because of no great consistent opposition. Thats why I emphasised on "undisputed". The batting sides around the world are also struggling. India is an example with the decline of Tendulkar, Laxman and Ganguly.

But Australia will face days, when things will click for the opposition and they will be made to look ordinary.

Great sides dont go down overnight and this Australian side had touched REAL greatness. They may remain at number one but I dont think the loss of the Ashes series was the only "shock" they are going to recieve in the current decade.

I could be wrong but this is my opinion.

The one silver lining in the attack (of all mentioned) is Stuart Clarke. To say that he will make up for the loss of MacGrath (looks like it with every passing day), the still unproven return of Gillespie to the form of three years ago etc is a bit too much at this early stage.

If he is a MacGrath in the making , great but thats to be seen.

You name the stakes
I smell an avatar/sig challenge.

How about...
If they don't make it past 300, Got Spin has to put a picture of Stuart MacGill in his avatar, and have a sig saying how much he simply adores Stuey's bowling.
If they do make it past 300, you have to get an avatar of Fred Durst, and have a sig saying how much you simply adore Limp Bizkit's music.

I don't think Australia is declining at all. I think it's just new players going through their rite of passage. The newer players and generation will continue with Australia's legacy and this is just the transition phase, IMO anyway.

Of course it isnt. Nothing ever is. But an end of an era of complete and unfettered Aussie domination... yes, it is. :)

And nothing to be ashamed of if it is. Its been a great run.
Rubbish.

The era of Australian domination, if it is over, ended with the Ashes. Bangladesh making 420 odd is neither here nor there. It was a flat wicket, Warne bowled poorly, Bangladesh batted well. Australia are coming off a 3-0 whitewash of a quality side in home conditions, in a series where McGrath didn't play and Warne had a moderately significant role. That alone indicates that Australia's bowling attack is still one of the best in the world. One day of bad cricket against a team that batted extremely well doesn't negate a summer in which Australia won 9 tests out of 10.
