*Official* Australia A in England 2019

Pattinson really hasn't lived up to his supposed allrounder batting ability for awhile now. He seemed to do well batting in grade when not bowling, but hasn't really delivered in FC.

Would he really bat above Cummins in Tests?

Probably not straight away just because Cummins is established in the side and has made runs lately, but if they both managed to play for 18 months without getting injured I'm pretty confident Patto would end up batting ahead of him. Different gravy tbh.

Of course not, Cummins did really well as a batsman last summer. He clearly should bat above Pattinson.
Cummins, Neser, Pattinson, Starc, Richardson, Siddle, Tremain, Hazlewood, Bird is the order I would bat the bowlers.

Bird running amok with 3-4 off 2 overs :)

Edit: Ummm Sussex all out for 120

Pattinson 3-12 (4-60 in 1st)
Holland 3-30 (3-49)
Bird 3-18 (1-44)
Neser 1-44 (2-45)

Hazlewood, a big fat 0 wkts for the match...

It is looking more and more like the Ashes squad is going to be the XI who played in the last test match against Sri Lanka plus Smith, Warner, Carey, Pattinson, Hazlewood and Holland.

However if Richardson is not fit then another bowler needs to come in, Bird or Tremain for me but with Tremain not playing this match the former seems more likely.

Hazlewood might need some wickets in the match against England A but he was the most economical bowler in this match perhaps indicating he did not bowl badly.

Hollands wickets did him no harm but I think he was a certainty for the second spinner spot anyway. I just hope Lyon plays every test.

Pretty ordinary from the Aus A middle order. Failed utterly against a second string County attack.

For English conditions Australia basically have the equivalent of two fast bowling attacks. Pattinson, Cummins, Starc plus Hazlewood, Bird and Siddle.

Bancroft been having a great season opening for Durham I'm surprised he wasn't playing
That's probably why he isn't playing, because he's already playing county cricket. No point taking a spot away from another player who doesn't have a county gig.

I would be extremely concerned about the prospect of playing Holland at any point in the series, don't back him at all to challenge Test batsman. Was a massive letdown in the UAE, five in the warm up game but completely **** the bed in the Tests, his control of length especially was nowhere near the standard requited. Labuschagne genuinely out bowled him that series. Thereafter Holland went back to Victoria and returned to his consistent ways there, but after last time I have no faith he can make it count at the highest level.

I thought the Australia A vs Australia XI was already a huge joke given the selectors are only picking the Ashes squad after the game (implying performance in this game is more important than what players have done in the last 12 months). I then read that Langer wants this game to be a 'schoolboy pick' whereby the two captains take turns in picking players in their XI's.

Now its XII players per side so not FC, with Paine also supporting a 'draft" pick of the sides rather than the current Australia A (where the team should be strongly bonded) vs the best of the rest from the WC squad (Smith, Warner, Carey, Cummins, Starc, Lyon), County cricket (Labuschagne, Bancroft, Siddle) and injury returns (Jhye Richardson, Khawaja if fit).

Rant over, looking forward to what I consider the most important game on tour, Australia A (with 5 Test incumbants) vs England A.

Eh I actually like the idea of a "trial match" where selection is on the line. The Ashes is a pressure cooker and you want players who can perform under pressure in the team. Would you rather have a bloke who scores runs when it matters against a good attack or a hack *cough*labushagme*cough* who plunders division 2 county attacks but will almost certainly fail under pressure.

It's mainly the 12 a side thing I can't stand tbh, if it's not a proper First Class game it isn't worth shite.

And at least Labuschagne isn't in danger of treading on his stumps the whole time he's out in the middle

Yeah agree with you there 12 a side and making it not First-class just ruins the competitive edge of the fixture, turning it into a glorified centre-wicket

I tend to think along the same lines, Holland is not really good enough but I am not sure anyone else is going to be better. I don't want to be playing Labuschagne as a specialist spinner although it could be argued we are better going in with 4 quicks and using Labuschagne as a spin option.

Of course, this discussion is only the contingency "Lyon breaks his wrist in a freak Jenga accident" plan.
