Surely third slip is much more useful than first slip to Konstas. First slip is a fake fielding position in general but especially against a guy slashing at it.

Thats right. Marsh averaged 33 in Test cricket. Call me controversial but I don't think Geoff Marsh was that good to be honest in Test cricket. He had a higher average in ODI cricket. His overall red ball (First-Class) average was just below 40 (average of 39).
Geoff was fortunate enough to play in arguably the weakest era in Australian cricket history and was then retained for a while because he was AB’s mate
