You'd hope it might serve as a wake up call on this attitude of non-preparation and degrading the Shield (including the 'picking fringe players to carry drinks in ODI squads' thing) but you just know it won't.

I mean just don't schedule a random ODI series in the week before a big series and they don't have this problem in the first place.

And with this 3-1 BGT loss, India have officially entered into SL/Pak territory in test match cricket, other subcontinent teams that struggle on seaming decks. Take out Bumrah, and youre basically playing another Pak or SL, despite having multiple times the population of both and a much richer cricket board. Theyve managed to go back decades in tests despite being the richest cricket board in the world and having arguably the most amount of grounds/infrastructure etc. I blame T20 and indias lack of being able to produce faster/bouncy pitches in Ranji due to climate reasons etc. This prevents development of fast bowlers and batters that can play bouncy pitches. They did have a brief period(7-8 years) that they conquered these issues, looks like it was yet another anomaly in this sport.

1. Rohit sharma- he must never be selected ever again. Either he retires/saves face or faces being dropped for the next tour. Dont know why he stuck around, shouldve just gone home. completely useless player, averaged less than aussie tail enders!
2. Virat kohli- huge weakness outside off stump, no longer test material.
3. Gill - is not test material .Has been given >30 tests and still no results. Just gets starts only. For a no.3 player, hes been extremely disappointing.
4. Siraj- huge drop off compared to the previous tour. They will need to assess his form, not drop him yet as he is still performing vs weaker teams in certain conditions.
5. Sundar- Cant keep stacking with all rounders/no rounders. Spin is not effective at all in overseas. seamer friendly conditions. Why picked?

Beyond FTP obligations I really don't understand what they bring either. It doesn't really seem a major money spinner for CA and all it means is that fringe players just don't develop especially if they're seen as all-rounders.

Incidentally everything that's happened since has just made the way Australia prepared for this series even more bizarre. More or less donated a Test match by going in so underdone.

I think when they last toured India they let the test players play BBL, arrived late without much practice and predictably lost the first test. I can see the same thing happening with the SL tour, and SL are objectively barely first grade standard

What has even happened to Aaron Hardie. He was the red-ball all rounder in waiting a couple years ago, they shove him in every meaningless white ball squad and now he gets leap frogged comprehensively by Beau Webster who was nowhere in the reckoning 2 years ago. Makes you think

The ones I feel most sorry for here are Sri Lanka. If we had drawn in Melbourne, they actually had a shot at the WTC final if they beat Aus 2-0. We were not even good enough to just block out Head and Lyon and help out our desi bros.

The refusal to accept that Starc isn't infinitely durable is something I continue to find somewhat baffling.
