The worst part is it is basically one weakness that has led him down this road. Basically, he sacrificed his back foot game to be able to counter swing after the 2014 series in England and has become a very front foot based player which means the drive is an important scoring option for him. He has no other ways to deal with short of length and good length balls outside off because of his press forward and seems to have had his rhythm messed up with the covid break and has simply been nicking off all the time ever since.

2023 seemed like we are getting the old Virat back but it has been a bit of a mirage. But look, sometimes you are also a bit unlucky. His first nick went to hand today. Sometimes its that luck when your first nick either goes to no man's land or flies over the slips or the fielder drops it, that can get an innings going. He was definitely tighter with his game today and in the first innings in melbourne but his own poor judgements and a bit of bad luck (nick going to hand the first time) cost him. Either way, I dont think he has anything left as a test cricketer and the kindest thing would be to move on from him, for now.
Yeah I thought he secured an England tour with the 1st test ton but four tests of nothing after that really puts him on thin ice. By right he doesn't deserve a spot.

The pitch will probably deteriorate further. Batting last will be tough.

Australia Batting Order - 4th Innings Record

Constas: Yet to bat in 4th innings
Khawaja: 698 runs @ 29.08
Labuschagne: 271 runs @ 27.10
Smith: 782 runs @ 32.58
Head: 413 runs @ 41.30
Webster: Yet to bat in 4th innings
Carey: 193 runs @ 38.60
Cummins: 23u runs @ 29.62
Starc: 266 runs @ 14.77
Lyon: 181 runs @ 10.05
Boland: 20 runs @ 20.00
Australia just got bundled today for sub 200 without much Bumrah contribution. Surely it can happen again.

There's too many young guys vying for the middle order positions. Ranji has a lot of 50++ ave young players

The wicket has certainly eased out a fair bit compared to yesterday. Tomorrow would probably be the best day to bat

What will secure his place will be his ODI and IPL performance. It is stupid but unfortunately it's how the dumb selectors will look at it and give him a bit more leeway.

The only thing keeping him away from retirement is that he's still supremely fit and somehow the selectors and the thinktank feel he'll figure it out despite repeated failures for years now.

And what an awful beginning for Gambhir as coach. Breaking records everywhere. If we don't have a strong performance in CT, which is very likely, his position as coach should be reviewed.

So those 9 guys bat to their averages and they’ll chase about 230 even if the other two make ducks.

attitudes like this are why other nations lack Australia’s long term excellence. It’s never ok to lose. Ever.
It was a joke in reference to Rohit's comments on losing the series to NZ. Anyway, the England series is just as important as this one. I mean, Australia haven't won a series in England for like 25 years...

This series is most likely gone but this team needs a bit of a rebuild to be ready in time for the England series.

And come next India tour, they won’t have won here in eight. But a drawn series here and the next series in India would secure them the trophy as holders.

My point is it’s never ok to lose. Anywhere or to anyone. Ever.
