Funny: first day Tony Greig goes on about how horrible the Perth pitch is and how they should revert to the older style. Day three Benaud says: "It is the best 4th day pitch I've ever seen".

Well they were last year.

For me the difference is that Australia are all out gunning for the Ashes whereas England don't have anywhere near as much of the intensity as last year and i'm going to say it's Vaughan's captaincy that makes the difference.

Even with Vaughan and Simon Jones and Trescothick (who's overrated in any case), Australia would still have won pretty comfortably imo.

You guys sat on your laurels after 2005 thinking you were such a great team when in reality you were not.

Australia critically analysed their game to become a better team and we're seeing the difference in the two approaches now.

I still maintain A lot of good fortune went England's way during last years AShes and they capitalized on that but they didn't look behind the final result to see there were still serious deficiences in their team:

Anyway some thoughts as to what's next for England (with a view to 2009)

1) Harmison, your main strike bowler continues to bowl rubbish most of the time.
2) Geraint Jones is not good enough period.....his keeping may have improved but his batting is tosh and that's not good enuf for a keeper anymore.
3) Flintoff is unreliable as a test batsman - and given that he bowls as a frontline bowler....you guys are effectively playing with only 5 batsmen given that Geraint cannot bat.
4) Giles served England reasonaly well but I think once Monty SIngh came on board, he should have been dropped immediately. Monty is so obviously a better bolwer and how many runs is Giles honestly going to make ?
5) The 4th seamer - Granted Simon Jones is injured and that's a big loss but if England want to be no.1 they need to develop depth particularly in the bowling dept......
I was prepared to give Mahmood a chance but from what I've seen he ain't test class.
Anderson I feel is overrated - I just cannot see him being consistently accuarte at test level with his action.
6) Openers - Cook is a young guy who needs to be developed but England need a consistent opening partnership if they wanna be world no.1
I'd bite the bullet and overlook Tres (who's pretty uselles outside England anyway part from his mental issues) and invest in STrauss and Cook.
7) Captaincy - Give it back to Strauss. Freddy is your best player and you want him to play without any undue pressure.
Besides Strauss I feel will be a better captain.

I thought he was bowling to their batsmen? Where has he been since?
Australia's bowling attack was dire (bar Warne) last time around. Simon Jones was the pick of the English bowlers really just a shame he went and did a Vaughan/Tresco/Giles/Flintoff and get injured either during or fairly soon after the Ashes.

Jones had one good series and that is all. He would have struggled in Australia.

Jones > Mahmood/Anderson and Harmison in his current state. Would he have made a difference? Clearly so.

Collingwood and Pietersen bowl better than Mahmood/Anderson. At least they don't go for 5 and 6 runs and over. I think in Australian conditions Jones wouldn't do much better than Mahmood and Anderson.

Oh, thank god for that.

Is it just me, or does Ian Chappell sound more like a cantankerous, over-opinionated old fool every time you hear him?
