*Official* 2024 South Africa tour of New Zealand: 2 tests

The Hutt Rec

International Vice-Captain
Latham is lucky Conway is struggling so much, because he's in pretty awful form himself, but there's been no mention of it.

Latham has a lot of rope and is probably in our ATG team due to our lack of class openers besides Turner. But yeah he's been in indifferent form for a while

Santner is a young 32 imo. Seems like he could go at this level for 6-8 more years comfortably right now.

Knock on wood and all that

Lol, no he's not. Sutcliffe, Wright and Richardson all clearly ahead of him. You could probably even make an argument for Fleming now there's no chance of him finding a spot anywhere else in the ATG top 6.

Even Fleming managed tons in England, Aus and SA and he was terrified of tons.

Latham is Guptill with a steady supply of Bangers SL.

The whole 'Latham only downhill skis and makes runs against minnows' narrative has been substantially defeated in this test.

I absolutely subscribe to the Wright and Sutcliffe arguments but Latham deserves to be mentioned with them. Has more hundreds than both. Sutcliffe had a very short career and Wright's record is poorer.

While it's an era of NZ roads, opening is still often difficult here as the new ball often swings a lot. And plenty of runs vs Bangers? Ffs Bangers have been good for pretty much his entire career

Look, I've got time for Latham. He's definitely a top 10, maybe top 5 all time NZ opener. He's also probably one of the better openers NZ has produced for subcontinent conditions. But when you're averaging sub-30 vs SEIAP, you can't really complain when people look at someone like Wright, who averaged 30+ v every country he played against (including some truly fantastic fast bowling units) and react to this comment with a lol.

And also no, Bangladesh have not been pretty good for pretty much his entire career. They've been pretty good at home, where Latham has toured only once.
