Reckon why Australia didn't push to finish it off last night is that they figured taking a bit more care and time to win by 10 wickets has much more of a psychological impact than winning quickly by 6/7 wickets; especially after things were almost level on the 1st innings.

What an incredible two days for Australia; Basically from lunch on the 3rd day they have destroyed England. Their side definitely has some issues but I can’t see them giving up this lead after this.

That's the game and what a game it was.

Steve Smith's innings really put the blowtorch on the English. If he'd have fallen for 80-odd on day 3 Australia would have been easily looking at a 120 run deficit. The psychological effect of leaving him unbeaten and Australia grabbing a first innings lead appears to have broken England and their response was feeble.

But look on the bright side, England only need to dismiss Smith 8 more times this series.

Too easy in the end. Australia's known batting issues gave England a real shout on day 2, but Smith with Marsh and the tail in support shut that down and it was all the home side really from Starc's dismissal.

England's attack just doesn't pose the threat in these conditions that is going to take 20 wickets for a low enough total to win very often. We'll probably see an Aussie lollapse or two somewhere along the way, but even that mightn't be enough to jag a win.

Smith’s innings will deservedly get a lot of focus and plaudits but I think the real story of this match is England’s batting.

On the Ashes podcast Howe_zat thought England wouldn’t be able to score enough runs and it seems (after a promising opening day) that he’s right. This pitch offered virtually nothing for the pacemen in terms of seam or swing (or even reverse swing) and still England came up well short. If they can’t even manage 200 in excellent batting conditions yesterday I can’t see them doing much better for the rest of the series.

I think their only hope is if one or more of the current Oz pace trio gets injured as with the short ball especially they have this batting lineup’s measure.

Interesting piece of trivia - this was the highest unbroken first-wicket partnership to win a test in the 4th innings.

Handscomb's scores since last summer.

He needs runs in the next test or he should rightly be dropped. Renshaw was dropped for less and Maxwell has been very impressive this season in the shield.

If Smith can score 7 hundreds in his next 8 home tests he will have equaled Bradman's tally in the same number of home tests.

In other statistically interesting news, an Australian batsman by the name of W Bardsley has the fifth-most number of hundreds by a non-England player in England. In total he scored 5 tons in England and 6 in total. His career spanned 1909-1926 and he averaged 50 in England. Surprisingly his career average was only 40 and he only scored one hundred outside England.

I'd be surprised if any changes are made while the team is winning. They ignored Nevs runs when he was dropped so Maxi is going to have the same issue. Handscomb they are probably still eyeing as a keeper so he'll get a long run.

Congratulations Australia, you were marvellous.

Big shout out to Ian Stewart, commissioner of the Queensland Police Force who has marshalled his troops excellently for all 5 days. I haven't heard any complaints about trouble in or around the ground.

Lets not forget all involved in the designing, building and maintaining of the Pacific Motorway. It's a wonderful road that, in my opinion, shows Australia at its best. Special mention to the courageous men and women monitoring the northbound exit and southbound entrance at Woolloongabba which has received increased traffic over the past 5 days.

Additional mentions to Nathan Lyon and Steve Smith who also contributed this week.

On to Adelaide. Quaint little city famous for the Barossa valley wine region, numerous churches and John Bunting, the bodies-in-barrels murderer.

Seeya there. xx

You'd think they might eye Bancroft as keeper, although probably not if he's opening. How many part time keepers do we need anyway?

At least we know we've got backup in case of injury.

Bankers has kept in the Shield this season so he's no chance.

N0000fers mate Tim #moretonsthanpaine Ludeman is surely the next in line.
