ODI Country/Average Combo Draft

honestbharani

Whatever it takes!!!
Honest Hunks

Shiv Chanderpaul
David Warner
Soumya Sarkar
Sikandar Raza
MS Dhoni (c) (wk)
Abdul Razzaq
Sam Curran
Chris Cairns
Kagiso Rabada
Maheesh Theekshana
Sandeep Lamichchane

7 proper bowling options, batting down to 9/10. 1 mystery spinner, 1 wrist spinner, 2 excellent and quick new ball bowlers, 2 swing/seam specialists to manage the middle overs and Raza the golden arm all sorts. This is a winning team.

My remaining two spots are covered by everyone else, so I'll finish my team with Trent Boult 22-25 and Ravi Shastri under 30.

It is tempting to open with Shastri, but he can push the ball around from 7 while Morkel and Streak smash it at the other end. Meanwhile Afridi will open and have a licence to hit while more traditional batters are at the other end.

Team so far:

Gordon Greenidge
Shahid Afridi
Greg Chappell (c)
Harry Tector
Aravinda Da Silva
Mushfiqur Rahim (wk)
Ravi Shastri
Albie Morkel
Heath Streak
Jofra Archer
Trent Boult

I've perhaps overdone it a bit with so many right handers and 8 quality bowling options (everyone except Greenidge, Tector, and Rahim), but it is a good side.

Now that FP has picked, I think I can take Ravi Jadeja as my 30+ bowler since no one else can pick an Indian. My <22 bowling pick is Rusty Theron (USA) based on the following ruling:

What is the ruling for players who have represented dual nations - e.g. Kepler Wessels - can they be picked for either nationality?
Yes, they can count for either nation.
What about for averages?

Is the average in that case just for the country chosen, or is overall ODI career average?
Fair question.

The average will be their total career averages.

Batting order:

01. Sanath Jayasuriya* /o
02. Neil Johnson /o
03. Colin Munro /
04. Shai Hope+ /
05. Mike Hussey /
06. Kevin O'Brien /o
07. Lance Klusener /o
08. Ravindra Jadeja o/
09. Wasim Akram o/
10. Darren Gough o
11. Rusty Theron o

Lots of players capable of big hitting in the side and it's quite an attacking batting side on the whole. The team bats pretty deep with Jadeja coming in at 8 and Akram at 9. Gough is no mug with the bat either.

Bowling order:

01. Wasim Akram
02. Darren Gough
03. Rusty Theron
04. Lance Klusener
05. Ravi Jadeja
06. Sanath Jayasuriya
07. Neil Johnson
08. Kevin O'Brien

Lots of bowling options with many of them quite comfortable bowling in the death. Led by the best ODI bowler of all time (IMO) in Akram.

Overall quite satisfied with this team. There are 4 players who will make it to 1st or 2nd all time world ODI XIs - Abbas, Bevan, Hadlee, Murali. They are ably supported by credible ODI performers in Marshall, Kallis, Pandya and Roy. 6 bowlers which is not something I force into XIs but with the need to pick players across variety of performance numbers I thought it became important. Batting down to #9 with Marshall more than capable of adding few valuable runs.

Total ODI games played by my playing XI: 2149
Total runs scored by my playing XI: 54,686
Total wickets taken by my playing XI: 997
Wicketkeeping dismissals: 337 catches | 37 stumpings

- A well experienced ODI unit led by Faf
- Dynamic opening pair of Gilly & Tendulkar that can demoralize any bowling unit
- Very strong middle order of Malan, Jayawardene, Faf, Harris can easily take care of those tricky overs of rotating the strike
- A bowling unit that believe in taking wicket without giving away runs. Economy rate of Ambrose (3.48), Price (3.99), McMullen (4.23), Harris (4.28), Dockrell (4.83), Gul (5.19) is incredible as a bowling unit.
- Well balanced with seasoned players and the young champs from associate nations

This draft is leading me to believe that i think different than most ? Is it consensus here that a strong batting lineup in ODI is more important than genuine wicket takers and a threatening bowling unit . Better to compromise on bowling than batting ? For me personally in the shorter formats will rather have a full threatening bowling unit and compromise on batting a strong tail is of less important than in test where for me personally it is much more valuable to have a very strong batting unit .

The teams so far in this draft makes me believe a lot of importance put on batting depth in ODI ?

I believe that a strong batting line up is needed in ODIs and a powerful bowling unit is much more important for the Tests.

When you refer to compromising on batting, do you mean the top order or depth?
I would compromise on batting depth to get wicket takers, but not at the expense of a strong top 4 or 5 batting line-up.
