Hunt to make debut

http://www.sydneyroosters.com.au/latestnews.php?ArticleID=1864

lower back problem has forced Australian fullback Anthony Minichiello out of Friday night’s Bundaberg Rum Rugby League Test against New Zealand at Suncorp Stadium.

Nineteen year old Brisbane Broncos fullback Karmichael Hunt has been named as his replacement and will train with the team this afternoon. Hunt joined the team at their Sydney base late this morning after a decision by selectors to add him as 18th man in the squad.

Minichiello was put through a full scale fitness test of his injured hamstring on Sunday afternoon and passed fit to play.

“There was no doubt Mini was desperate to play and he did everything we could have asked in the fitness test,” ARL Chief Executive Mr Geoff Carr said today.

“However when he was further assessed that night there was some ongoing concern over whether a lower back problem he has been carrying did not make the overall risk too high for him and the team.

“After discussions with team medical staff, the selectors made a late request for Karmichael Hunt to be put on stand by and asked to fly to Sydney today as a precaution.

“Anthony had a light work out this morning and following a later assessment by team doctor Hugh Hazard we decided it was best that Anthony be ruled out.”

Hunt will join fellow Queenslander Johnathan Thurston as Test debutants in the most keenly anticipated Trans Tasman contest in years.

“Karmichael has been long recognised as an outstanding talent and to see him make his debut along with Johnathan Thurston adds an exciting dimension to the team.” Mr Carr said

“Karmichael has had to beat an outstanding array of fullbacks and it’s a real credit to him to have done so.”

NZ have been instruted to start Benji off the bench..
And? The Wests Tigers don't control NZ Rugby League, if we want to play him for 80 minutes there's nothing stopping us is there?

its actually the doctors and not the Tigers who have made this request, its for his own personal well being, not so the tigers can keep him in cotton wool...

I hope he gets a game and sticks it to the kiwis...
What has he got to stick to us? We have offered him a jersey 3 times and he has turned it down. How good will it be if we beat AUS and he has a shocker and is never picked again. That will be justice.

why should u hold it against him that he doesnt want to play for NZ?
hes more of an aussie than Brent Webb or Jason Cayless are kiwis...

lol at Hunt. I hope someone kills him out there.
who? Steve Matai lol...
Cant wait to see Matt King and Mark Gasnier tear him to shreds, i think i was being a little generous to the kiwis saying we will win by 40, could be more now...

More rubbish from the Aussies trying to undermine international rugby league:

There might be a flare up today between the Kiwis and the Kangaroos.

Bulldogs Kiwi players Roy Asotasi and Sonny Bill Williams have been held back from the Kiwis camp on the Gold Coast.

They stayed in Auckland on last night, flying across the Tasman this morning.

Bulldogs doctor and Australian team doctor Hugh Hazard has held the players back, wanting to check out bumps and bruises before releasing them to the Kiwis.

The test squad went into camp last night on the Gold Coast, without Williams and Asotasi.

There is no official comment at this stage from the Kiwis camp.

What is the deal with the Cayless brothers? Don't they have kiwi parents but were brought up in Australia?

Brent Webb would have played for Australia if they had have offered him a jersey first... but I guess you are right. Webb is a better full back than Hunt anyway.

Hunt isn't even close to being the best fullback in Australia.

The Cayless brothers grand parents are kiwis i think, Jason played for City before turning to NZ so in all reality hes more of a traitor than Hunt...

webb isnt better than Hunt lol, not even close, the only reason webb chose to become a kiwi is because he knew he never had a chance of playing rep footy as an australian, Hunt made the decision knowing there was a posibility that he'd never play rep football...

Actually, it was agreed on by Mclenhan and Tim Sheens, The doctor said he should start off the bench and play a max of 60 mins for his 1st game back and Sheens said he wouldnt release him if the Kiwis werent going to abide by the orders...

The Tigers are actually doing the Kiwis a favour, they could have easily ruled him out saying he wasnt fit enough to play a full game..

Webb is far better than Hunt. He was the player of the Tri Nations and is one of the only Warriors that looks like he is trying. Hunt isn't even in the top 5 full backs in the comp. It really is a staggering decision.

webb is crap, hes one of the worst fullbacks in the comp, only david simmons is worse...
Hunt's selection is a view to the future, personally i wouldnt have picked him but hes not the worst player they could have chosen...

Seriously though, im happy Hunt is getting a chance, Minni = Injured, Hodgo = injured, Bowen = Over-rated, Theres not alot of other options, I would've probably gone either Hunt or Inglis in line for the future... Hunt is getting a chance and we'll now see if he has made the right decision in knocking back the Kiwis...
