Gayle and Chanderpaul squeezed the life out of our bowlers on Day Four with a massive second wicket stand of 311 runs, taking the game supposedly out of our reach.
The Windies declared shortly before stumps, leaving us a victory target of 372. We've scored this much in a day more than once previously, but in a fourth innings, it's a tough ask.

Win to the Windies by 18 runs

The last day was full of excitement as the Windies looked like wrapping it up comfortably at first, then NZ looked as though they might pull off the win, and then finally when the match was heading for a draw, Reon King snapped up the final wicket in the last over of the day! :@

The West Indian quicks came out snorting fire, ripping through our batsmen to have us 114/6 just before lunch.
Our last hopes, Vincent and Styris, then put together a 161 run partnership. However, at 275/7, Vincent would require the support of the tail to stave off defeat.
When Bond fell at 290/8, it remained a tall order for us. But Vincent found a stoic ally in Mark Gillespie, and at 348/8 we only needed a further 24 runs with just over half an hours play remaining.
When Gillespie had his leg stump uprooted at 348/9, we decided to shut up shop with Vincent trying to farm the strike.
Then heartbreak in the very final over as King yorked Michael Mason to end the match and start wild celebrations amongst the home fans.

Windies v NZ (2nd Test)

Just one change to our side for the 2nd Test.
Five pace bowlers seemed a bit over the top for the first test, especially as Styris was unproductive and overly expensive in that area.
I feel we can cope with the three specialists (Bond, Mason and Gillespie) backed up by allrounder Jacob Oram (and Jesse Ryder if necessary).
This enables us to bring Brendon McCullum into the side as keeper. We lose nothing in the way of batting strength and it enables Timothy Weston to concentrate on his responsibilities as a batsmen. It had been felt that the dual role of top order batsmen and keeper had been affecting his performance in both areas.

The victorious Windies side was unchanged.

The Windies won the toss and predictably elected to take advantage of the prime batting conditions.
Our bowlers toiled manfully in the stifling heat throughout the day, chipping away taking wickets without letting any of the home batsmen get away on them.
Honours pretty much even at the end of Day One.

With the aid of the tailenders, Windies keeper, Carlton Baugh, helped add a further 70 valuable runs on the second morning to take his side past 400.

When we batted, the pattern of batsmen getting starts but failing to last the distance, continued.
Things didn't look good at 137/4 after both Sinclair and Vincent fell cheaply, but thankfully Jesse Ryder and Tim Weston showed fine touch to establish an unbeaten partnership of 84 to keep things in the balance.

A big batting effort will be crucial on Day Three as the pitch develops more cracks. Batting in the fourth innings is not an inviting prospect!

Unfortunately, both Ryder and Weston fell just short of their centuries and it was left to Brendon McCullum to take us just past the Windies first inning total with a late flourish.
The Windies batsmen struggled in their second dig as the pitch showed obvious signs of demons.
We'll be hoping to restrict them on Day Four because a big total won't be gettable in the fourth innings here!

Win to NZ by 7 wickets

Our bowlers finally put it all together in a stunning display of hostility and accuracy.
Three of the Windies batsmen were hit in the body by nasty rearing deliveries which softened them up before dismissals.
Wrapping the Windies up for a paltry 139 all out left us with a victory target of just 138! :-O

Fulton went early, but Fleming and Ryder allayed the nervous jitters with a solid little partnership that saw off the new ball.
Although Fleming fell for just 15, it was a valuable little knock in support of a more confident and aggressive Ryder.
Ryder and Sinclair took us through to within 16 runs of victory before their match winning partnership came to an end, Ryder out for an impressive 72.
Sinclair hit the winning run shortly after tea and raised his arms in delight. We'd levelled the test series 1-1. :)

Windies v NZ (1st ODI)

We decided to use Jesse Ryder as the fifth bowler again. Although he doesn't take many wickets, his economy rate is quite good, effectively making him an allrounder in this form of the game.
Ross Taylor came in for an out of touch Peter Fulton.
Jeff Wilson performed well for us at the World Cup, adding to the side with both his bowling and batting.

Led by a graceful Chanderpaul century, the Windies put a big total on the board.

I've found it best to attack from the start when chasing a run rate of over 5 per over, and so that was our approach.
Ross Taylor going to the first ball of the innings didn't help our cause, but we persisted and Fleming and Weston put on a century stand to get us back on track.
After surviving a mini-collapse in the middle order, it was left to Craig McMillan to guide us through to an emphatic victory, achieved with 7 overs to spare!

Windies v NZ (2nd ODI)

One change to our side with Bruce Martin replacing Jeff Wilson as there looks to be a bit of turn in the wicket.

The Windies made two changes with opener Daren Ganga replacing Wavell Hinds and spinner Dave Mohammed replacing Taylor.

West Indies - 221/7

S.Chanderpaul - 77
R.Hinds - 50no
B.Martin - 3/45

New Zealand - 222/5

S.Fleming - 112

Chanderpaul was again the main threat as he raced past his half century in ominous fashion. Thankfully we cut him off in the 70's.
Then Ryan Hinds took over the steering hand, but with little substance at the other end, we curtailed the run rate to restrict the home side to 221/7.
Bruce Martin got taken to initially by Chanderpaul, but came back into his own to finish with a creditable 3/45.

Stephen Fleming carried on his good form by stroking his way to 50 off 35 balls!
Although the Windies bowlers toiled manfully, their total was not enough to pose a challenge.
Flem gathered up his second ODI century of the season as we cruised in with five overs to spare.

NZ 2-0 up with just one ODI remaining. A series win to celebrate Fleming's upcoming retirement. :)

With the series won, we gave the those squad members who hadn't played in either of the first two matches a run.
Peter Fulton, Neil Broom, Scott Styris, Brendon McCullum, Daniel Vettori and Mark Gillespie came in while Ross Taylor, Timothy Weston, Craig McMillan, Mathew Sinclair, Bruce Martin and Shane Bond were rested.
For the Windies, Wavell Hinds came back in to replace Ganga while spinner Dave Mohammed retained a spot ahead of Reon King.

Our understrength bowling attack did well to restrict the Windies to 235/3.
We were looking okay at 125/2 in reply with Fulton leading the way, but a remarkable spell of spin from Ryan Hinds saw us lose five wickets for 22 runs, and that was basically the game! :-O

So NZ take the ODI series 2-1.

Stephen Fleming is no longer eligible for NZ selection due to my criteris of "retiring" players once they reach 35 years of age.

Scott Styris has retired from all forms of the game, as has Michael Mason. This will put the pressure on others to step up and support Shane Bond as opening partner.

A promising new opener, Darren Meier, has arrived on the scene and looks likely to become part of our future plans. :)

Those who could be considered unlucky to miss the cut were batsman Jarrod Englefield, allrounder Kyle Mills, and pace bowler Daryl Tuffey.
Daniel Vettori wasn't considered at all, and we're certainly lacking for quality spinners currently.

The big news is the appointment of Timothy Weston as our new captain.
It was decided that we needed a player could captain us in both Tests and ODIs, and Weston was the best man for the job based on this criteria.

Rawalpindi v NZ (Friendly)

A shadow test eleven was selected for the three day warm up against Rawalpindi.
The big talking point regarding the side was the selection of James Franklin ahead of Jacob Oram.
The justification given was that more variety was needed in our attack and that Franklin provided this with his left armers. He is also a more successful bowler than Oram, so the trade off in batting strength was seen as necessary to the all round balance of the team.
With Warren McSkimming's selection ahead of Mark Gillespie, it was also felt that the inclusion of another medium pacer would be unwise.

Win to NZ by 10 wickets

James Franklin cemented his selection in the upcoming 1st Test side with a penetrating display in this match.
It is not often that Shane Bond plays second fiddle to anybody these days, but that was certainly the case here.
McSkimming was solid and Bruce Martin continues to go from strength to strength as his confidence builds.

In the batting department, Peter Fulton was sturdy as usual, Tim Weston crafted a fine century in his debut match as NZ captain, and Craig McMillan bludgeoned his way to 98.
Mathew Sinclair continues to struggle in NZ colours and will need a standout performance in the 1st Test.

The pitch looks likely to favour the seamers more throughout, so Jacob Oram was given a reprieve, preferred as the fourth bowler ahead of Jeff Wilson and Mark Gillespie.
Bruce Martin left out of the playing eleven.

Unfortunately, Pakistan won the toss and leapt at the chance to bat first.
However, to have them at 399/8 under the circumstances, was a pleasing result.
Bond, Franklin and Oram all impressed, but Warren McSkimming had an ineffectual debut.
