NZ squad for the ODI series v Zimbabwe (2010)
With another World Cup not too far off, I decided to try out as much youth as possible during the OD series against Zimbabwe, in the hope of discovering some much needed talent!
Richard Bucknall (24 yrs) and
Murray Jagger (21 yrs) joined veteran
Stephen Fleming (36 yrs) as the openers in the squad.
Bucknall is far and away the top OD batsman on the domestic scene, but has not produced the goods at international level to date.
Jagger has had more success with the limited opportunities he's had.
Fleming of course has been a proven performer and will be a good mentor for the youngsters.
Captain
Peter Fulton (31 yrs) is joined in the squad by fellow batsmen
Simon Treanor (22 yrs),
Jesse Ryder (25 yrs),
Brendon Diamante (28 yrs) and
Jeff Tyson (25 yrs).
Fulton and Ryder have been regulars for a while now without setting the world on fire.
Diamante has been a consistently good performer on the domestic scene, but has failed to step up at international level to date despite several opportunities.
Much is expected from Treanor. It will be interesting to see if he can deliver.
Tyson will be making his debut at international level.
Matthew Sinclair (34 yrs) and
Colin Hampton (23 yrs) cover the keeping spots.
Sinclair is in the twilight of his career and his recent form has been disappointing. However I like to have the option of a batsman/keeper in case the batting needs shoring up.
Hampton has had a disastrous start to his ODI career, but is given another chance to prove himself.
Four allrounders have been selected -
Jacob Oram (31 yrs),
Kyle Mills (30 yrs),
Scotty Styris (34 yrs) and youngster
Ian Henry (21 yrs).
Oram is a proven performer and consistent.
Mills and Styris have solid records.
Henry has burst onto the scene and is seen as one of NZ's stars of the future. As a left arm fast bowler, the main concern will be his control and runs conceded.
Andrew Aimson (21 yrs) gets the spinner's spot in the squad. His progress to date has been very exciting.
Iain O'Brien (33 yrs),
Chris Benson (20 yrs) and
Mark Birch (25 yrs) are the specialist pacemen.
O'Brien is miserly and consistent.
Benson and Birch are the hopes of the furure and need exposure at the highest level in order to develop quickly.
