(Fulton is on interview) I don't think we got the most from him. I guess most would remember his test opener stint where his weaknesses were exacerbated, but he was a pretty good ODI player for his era for some time (had a great little run from the CB 2006 series, the CH and then the 2007 WC) and his offstump awareness wouldn't have been tested as vigorously if he was batting in the middle order for the test side where he was suited.

He wasn't going to get past KW, Taylor, McCullum and Ryder ofc but his conversion to being a briefly serviceable test opener so late in his career was a good effort really. He'd already proven in ODIs he could play.

Think his footwork had also degraded by his late career NZ stint. Do think he would've been a decent middle order NZ batter if he'd been given faith in his late 20s, in a middle order position, though I can't remember exactly who he was competing with at the time. Certainly had the patience and will to score big centuries.

Yeah, he was a very handy ODI player and although not suited to the opening role did manage back to back centuries in that 2013 test we nearly won at Eden Park against England.

How does Nathan Smith not score more runs? He's talented and more technically sound than most balanced allrounders.

Oh, that's how. Tbf it's the slog overs.

Yeah from 2008 Taylor, Ryder, McCullum and later KW pushed guys like Fulton, Broom, Brownlie, Nicol and Flynn into pursuing top order positions they weren't suited to.

That side suffered from the early retirements of Styris, McMillan and Oram too. Taylor was the senior batsman in his 4th test.
