NZ domestic season 2023/24

Fisher bowled a load of trash and deserved everything he got. Ball after ball short and wide with no boundary riders against one of the best players of short **** in the world. That 1 over probably cost ND the match.

Fine game, another very tidy performance from Smith. Gee Sears falls over in his delivery stride alot, aye?

Does anyone else immediately hit mute as soon as the commentators start talking to the players? I can't stand it.

Canterbury going alright here but probably need 60+ off the last 5 overs at least.
Occasionally it's not second-hand embarrassment for the players but also for the commentators (or commentator), like when someone who I'm sure we can all guess was shouting into Raval's mic as he was preparing to take a catch. God, imagine how infuriated he'd rightly be if it caused him to drop it.

Dropping McLaughlin on naught off Pringle hurt them too. An absolute sitter, top edge off a mistimed sweep but the player maybe tried to take it too low and spilled it.

Simon Doull did it to Ajaz Patel a few years ago.

O'Rourke should have had Rutherford out second ball there, but ended up conceding 12 off the first over instead.

Yeah, I think it’s more about the commentators than the players for me as well. Most of the chat from the players is pretty bland, which is fine given they’re literally playing a game of cricket.

But the commentators are just unbearably inane 99% of the time. They’re largely not professionally trained journalists, so I’m not sure why we’d expect them to be able to ask interesting questions given the context. Would far prefer they stick to offering their own insights (given their own cricket experience is how they ended up in the chair anyway).

Jeez, that Jacob's is a big unit for a batsman. Had sound off, trying to work out who completed that catch. Thought it was Shipley back for a sec.

On the subject of the mic'd up players. I said a few pages back than when talking to Zak Foulks a few games ago it was interesting.

One of the female commentators (either McKay or Martin, who are excellent btw) asked him how he sees himself as an allrounder, whether as batter or bowler primarily. His answer was interesting. Sees himself primarily as a batter but concedes he is playing for Canterbury as a bowler in the white ball stuff. But in red-ball sees himself primarily as batting all-rounder (which would be backed up by bowling loads).

2 let offs on the boundary early for Chu, now making them pay.

But I'm pleased for him, because his batting was selfless from ball 1.

Watching Henry Nicholls bat in NZ domestics reminds me so much of every fading/struggling international batsman ever; who got given a shot against New Zealand, and immediately proceeded to rack up a massive hundred and thereby securing their place in the side for another 12 months

Oh. Another mic'ed up player snippet gem.

I only heard this second hand, as I had it muted when they were talking to him. But then sumo paraphrased it later in the commentary. Asked sbout Fisher's pace and Seifert said he stands a bit further back for Kuggeleijn than for Fisher. (Obviously heigh and carry also comes into where a keeper stands, but was interesting ).

I think this shows that cricketweb members should report interesting stuff from the player mic here, as so many of us delicate petals pre-emptively mute as we can't stand the cringe, and miss the odd inside info gem.
